Greenville, July 4.?The recent allusion in print to the appointment of a pension examining board for Greenvillo by the United States authorities have been vague and enigmatical for fhn mnot ' **? vuv.uiudi ^?ii, buu i?n persons i realized there wrs probability 1 of such an appointment being made, since Uncle Sam had few pensioners as yet in this part of his possessions. The Spanish war and the Philippine war have produced a ue w crop of veterans, and they are not slow to accept the liberality of the government which has been energized by that other claes of veter- 1 ana who saved the union from the onslaughts of a raged, half j starved army of "rebels" in the sixties. Hence with the increasing supply medical examining board here and there, and as only Gharleston, Columbia and Beau- 1 M i. ? * ' * " i ore a re supplied with these appendices of the war department why should Greenville not secure a board to examine present and prospective pensioners? And thereby hangs a tale not unmixed with the progressive politics of the day. The genesis of the suggestion for an examining board hero is not necespary to a clear understanding of what follows, but it is well to remark that the new ( commissioner of pensions at Washington. Mr. Eugene K. Ware! of Wisconsin, has a close relative! in this city, I)r. G. H. Hottum, a most estimable man, who has been living in the nouth for quite awhile, but. who was reared in the north, and is a mild type ofl Republican in politics when it) comes to voting in national elections, buf a SturdV Ikmnrmt in I local affairs. The suggestion for an examining board wi* duly referred to Cap!. .John (J. Capers, formerly | a citiren of (rreenville, who is I umpiring the game of politics just miw to suit the purposes of the fwdoral administration in South Carolina, and the umpire discovered that it was necessary to have two Republicans and one Democrat in order to constitute a legal, duly inaugurated board of inquiry as to the ailments and infirmities of pensioners. It wus stipulated from Washington that Dr. Bottum was to become a member of the board, and Mr. Capers very naturally proposed Dr.G.Tupper Swandale, one of the foremost physicans in the city, should be another member, who would be properly assigned as a Democrat. So far there was plain sailing, and neither of the gentlemen had any objection to serving on the board or to serving with each other, but in a few days it was announced to them by Mr. Ca pers that the third member would be Dr. W. T. Smith of this city, who would be asigned aa a Republican. Th? Ue is respectable and doubtless capable and is a former resident of Sumter, but the color line on the third member was not at all satisfactory to his proposed colleagues, who immediately declined the honors that were awaiting them. Thus the matter stands at this writing and it remains to be seen what Mr. Capers will do with the proposition now before him, with the colored brother lingering as it was in the lap of oflical luxury, "solitary and olone," after the fashion of the horseman in the ancient novel. Chicago, July 5.?By a fire , which broke oat in their plant at the stock yards tonight, Swift <fe Co. suffered a loss which is estimated by the olficials at $1,000,-j 000. The fire was confined to one building standing at the intersection of Packers avenue and Broadway. This structure was four stories high, built of brick, and was 300 feet square. The first fioor was occupied by the wholesale meat market of the company, the second by the shipping department and the third and fourth by the general ollices of the company. The latter are said to have been the largest single offices in the United States more than bOO employes working on one of the lloors in a single room. The cause of the fire is not known, but it was discovered near the engine room. It spread so rapidly through the building that it was found impossible to o rn onw$Li?%? ? 1 D?<v> hi iiie structure. The burned building adjoins portions of the plants of Armour <fc Co., and Libby, McNeil A Libby, and for a time the fire department had a desperate fight to keep these buildings from the dames. W. J. Chicago, July 5.?The InterOcean tomorrow will Ray : Combinations of the companies controlling tho packing industry of the United States has finally been consummated, with John D. Rockefeller as the central figure in the financial part of the negotiations. Final arrangements have been made for the consolidation of the Swift and Armour interests, which have recently gained control of the ether (packing concerns throughout the| country. The final steps, which were taken today, require merely the merging of the Swift and Armour interests. There are, it is said, Dne or two companies not yet wholly under this control, but negotiations are pending with a favorable outlook. Swift A Co., who own the Sioux City stock yards, aud the Libby, McNeill A Lib by company business, recently secured control of a majority of the stock of the Anglo-American Packing company. Armour & Co., have secured control of the G. II. July 2.?There are hut few towns the age and size of Kershaw in the South that have the dashing and hustling council and progressive, wide-awake business men who take hold of new enterprises and modern improvements and carry their projects through. The city council yesterday granted the Kershaw Oil Mill an exclurive franchise tor furnishing electric lights and power, and contracted with them for 20 years to supply ttie town with their lights. The oil mill will install machinery and expects to be ready before winter to light the street? of Kershaw with arc lamps of the latest pat tern, and the business houpes and residences with incandescent lights. With this view the oil people yesterday purchased two 80 horse power high pressure boilers and a 16x42 Corliss engine. The piping, hydrants and everything needed for the water works here has been shipped and Mr. Gould, who is to superintend the work,, expects to have t'he water works completed in sixty days.
