The details of the terrible volcanic upheaval of MontPelee on the island of Martinique, which is one of the numerous islands that lie north of South America, and belong to what is known as the "LesserAntilles," a part of the West India Islands, i<? one of the most awful catastrophes of the kind known to the history of man for all time. Recent times, have seen nothing to compare with it. The volcano that wrought such havoc 011 the 8th of this month on the island of Martinique is within the area that was so .greatly disturbed by the celebrated earthquake that destroyed the city of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755, and of that destructive earthquake that occurred in 1812 in the northern part of South America and destroyed the city of Caracas, Venezuela, with 12,000 people These cities are now much safer for many years to come than if Mont Pelee had not behaved so badly. She opened her crater and let out the pent-up force that was a constant menace to that area. This intensely interesting war , drama in four acts was excol- 1 lently rendered by our amateurs ' last Friday night to a crowded house. Indeed, so delighted was the audience with the ren dition of the play that a request was made for a repetition of the performance, and tonight it will be rendered in the courthouse with reduced prices. They have 1 also received invitations to ap pear in four neighboring towns but can only accept, one, ami have decided to play at Rock , Hill next Friday night The I cause for which our young poo-!1 pie have gotten up this entertainment, viz: to raise funds for the erection of a monument to the memory of the Confeder ate soldiers of Lancaster county, is a laudable one, and doubtless ! drew well 011 this account, but ; every otic present felt that he 1 had gotten his money's worth aad more. Many of our best ' citizens pronounced the plav the best they have ever seen in Lancaster. Everyone acted so well and everything seemed so real that the spectators were simply carried away with it. Mr. Hughes filled the character of Gen Dering.C S A , perfectly, and Senator Ilough could hardly he improved 011 as Captain Gordon Beverly, chief of staff. J. H. Foster as Major Jack War rington entered fully into the character as did also Mr. J. E. Johnson as Lieut. Forrest. Miss Addie Garter was very natural in the character of Mrs. Warrington, and Miss Ida Corbett simply charmed the audience as Marion Warrington, her daughter, while no amateur need hope to excel Miss Mamie Huey as Kate Con yers, her niece. Mr Dan Jones as Ned. a negro servant, and I Miss Clara Barrett as MomKlsie, a family servant, were both splendid, and M r. Steve Williams made a good Yankee sergeant. Kd. W. Sistare as a Confederate scout, and Messrs. Letter Nelson and Dan Tillman as Confederate soldiers acted well their parts. Mr. J. T. Thomasson made a i handsome and excellent surgeon | Too much cannot, lie oaiil in i commendation of the perfor inance. The old camp songs were touching and the boys looked like real soldiers when > seated about the tent singing. o n The door receipts for the evening amounted to ?1)3.
