People Were Warned of Approaching Eruption But Only a few Women and Children Fled. But one of Eighteen Ships Escaped Destruction. Castries, St. Lucia, B. W. I., May 10.?Mont Pelee, a volcanic mountain some ten miles north of St. Pierre, the commercial capital of Martinique, is the mountain which made a faint show of eruption oft years npo. I On May 3 last it began to throw j out dense clouds of smoke. At I midnight the satno day tlames accompanied with rumbling noises, lighted the sky over an; immense area, causing widespread terror. May 4 hot ashes covered the whole city quarter of St. 1'ierre an inch thick and j made Mont 1'eleo invisible. At! noon. May 5, a stream of burning lava rushed 4,400 feet down the mountain side, following the dry bed of a torrent and reaching sea, five miles from the mountain , in three minutes. lu its rush the tier}' ilood swept from its path plantations, buildings, factories, cattle and human j beings over a breadth of about a ' mile. At the rear of the mouth of the river Blanche stood the large; Guerin sugar factory, one of the! finest in the island. It is now completely entombed in lava.The tall chimney alone is visible. As the lava rushed into the sea, the latter receded 300 feet all along the west coast. Returning with greater strength, a big wave covered the whole sea front of St. Pierre, but doing little darnV V J age ashore or alloat. Terrible detonations, heard hundreds of miles northward, followed at short irregular intertervals and continued at night. The electric light failed but the town was lit up by lurid Hashes of llame from the mountain. The terror stricken inhabitants rushed for the hills iu their night clothes, screaming, shout ing and wailing?mad with terror. The IMissoni family escaped to St. Lucia in a small steamer. The samo afternoon later, telegraphic communication was interrupted with both the islands of Martinique and St. Vincente. During the afternoon of thej 8th tlie British steamer lioddam, which had left St. Lucia at niid-l night on the 7th for Martinique, crawled slowly into ihe Castries harbor, unrecognizable, gray withashts, her rigging dismantled and sails and awnings hang in? about, torn and charred. Whatter reported that having just anchored oil St.l'ierre at 8 a. m. in fine weather sue ceeding an awful thunderstorm during the night, he was talking to the ships's agent, .losepfi l'iisono, who was in a boat alongiide, when he saw a tremendous cloud of smoke and glowing cinders rushing with terrific rapidity over the town and port, complete, ly, in an instant, enveloping the former in a sheet of llame and raining lire on board. The agent had iust time to climb on board when his boat disappeared. Several of the crew of the Koddam werequickly scorched to death.By superhuman efforts, having steam up, the cable was slipped and the steamer backed away from the shore, and nine hours later, managed to reach Castries. Ten of the ltoddam's men were lying dead, contorted and burned out of human semblance, among the black cinders which covered the ship's deck to a depth of six inches. Two moro of the crew have since died. UKKOIC CAPTAIN ON SKA OF FLAMES. The survivors of the Hodman's crew were loud in their praise ol the heroic conduct of their captain in steering his vessel out of danger with his own hands, which were badly burned by the rain of tire which kept falling on tin* ship tor miles after she got under way.
