GERMAN KALI WORKS, fi Nassau St., New York. For The Enterprise. The ConipasH. "As true as the needlo to the pole," is a simile of the lone past. Columbus, in 1492, tir&l discovered that the compass 11 edle toes not point due north :it all daces. Ilenry Gellibrand, in 10 4, liscovered that the needle does not point hi the same direction, ,t the same place, year aftci year. And it was not until 1722 that Iraham, of London, discovered 'hat the needle chances its '<rnr ion slightly during the middle hour of each day. In. the eastern portion ol the United States?in Maine.?the needle now points 21 decrees west of the true north, while in Washington, in the extreme west rn part of the union^tho needle viow points 23 degrees east of the irue north. At London the nee die now points 17 degrees west of north. In the eastern part of o^ir state the needle now points about 1 degree west of north, whil^in the western part of the state the needle points about 2 degrees ea ' of the true north. In our cm nt.y he needle?north end ? i ow points i degree west of tho mo ' orth meridian, while in (??v??n villo and Spartanburg counties, 'he magnetic needle now coin < ides with the true north and couth lino. There are places on the earth'.* ?ui face where the needlo, far rom pointing north and south, points due east and west. Again there are other places between the magnetic north pole and the true north pole where the north nd of the needle actually points south. In 1700 the needle pointed to ne true norm ; in 17&0 it point< d about 14 to 1 4-10 degree t ast of the true north ; in 1 S'K), it pointed 44 to 5 degrees east of the true north, reaching 5 degrees or possibly more east in Hit'), its t astern limit; in 1850 the nt _dio , ointed about 24 degrees -.st; i 1890 the needle pointed al.c it 1 ) the true north line hero* d l ow points about about 4 d- ee est of north, as just et^Vd ! bove. The needle will lil ely < )ntinue in its westerly swing for 'he next hundred years or more -no one knows just how long During the month of August the needle will point 1 10 to 4 < f a degree further west at 1 to 'j o'clock p. m. than it does during the early morning hours, but this daily change ii hardly notice able in cold weather. From an insufficient knowledge i'f this declination or variation of the declination of the compass needle many of the past surveyors of our county have been unable to retrace the old lines, and now the surveyors of today find bun dreds and even thousands of blunders all over our county. Local attraction and carelessness, too, have caused hundreds of crooked lines to be left in almost ^.^every nook and corner of our c(Y:mU.yi which makes surveying a vorV* difficult and particular thing with the people of today. In a plumber of our States meridian posts, or stones, have I een placed near the county v m court ho usee, whero every surveyor can test Li* cotijjjass, at least onco a year, and re run, with al most perfect accuracy, all linos run since such stones were thus !erected. It would ho well il our logisla lorn would see to such stones heing placed at Lancaster at an early date. This ought to have been done 50 years ago, and hundreds of (iiWpufes and a number of our lawsuits would never have been heard of; but, "It is uever i too late to do good.'* Surveyorsof North Carolina and other Suites are compelled by law to test their compasses on such stones, at least once a year, and to iile the result with the Clerk of the Court, giving name and date, on a register prepared for this purpose. I hope the surveyors of the 20th century will all hew to the marlc,,in ohl Lancaster county, and give the coming generations ru little cause for future trouble j as possible. T. M. Helk.
