A Million Dollar Residence Sold. The famous maneiou which A T Stewart reared as a residence for himself more than a quarter of a century ago, at the corner of Fifth avenue and Thirty Fourth street which later was the home of the Manhattan Club, is to be torn down and the work of demolition has already been begun. The mansion cost over $1,000,000, and it was sold as it stood last Wednesday for its estimated value j as a pile of second hand building material. Its demolition began on Thursday and will continue until the material has all been removed to a yard at Avenue Ii! and Eighteenth street, to bo sold | there piece by piece for what it | is worth for marble, stone, iron, and wood. Since the Manhattan Club moved out the house has been vacant. When the Knickerbocker Trust Company bought the! land and building some time ago1 it had no use for the mansion that was all but historic, and saw a greater value in the land wit h the house removed. The purchasers j of the building as a speculation j in second-hand materials were F \V Seacris' Jr & Co. The terms j of sale provide that the last ves ! tige of it shall be off the ground' in forty eight days. Its construe-' ion took two years. The deal which consigned the building to (he junk pile was a very quiet one, bo quiet that when on Thursday morning a groupe of workmen gathered on the roof and began its destruction most people who noticed them were surprised. They didn't see the workmen make very much progress, for even in the roof that care which characterized the entire construct ion of the building, and which will make it destruction no easy job, was met with. In the roof, 1oo, workmen met with evidence of the expensive manner iu which i he work of construction had been carried on. The roof was of iron plates. The contractors said yes terday they were very sure there wasn't another such roof in New ! York. The whole mansion is of iron and stone and marble, (he amount of wood in it boing inconsiderable and confined for the most part to door and window sashes. Builders have awaited the demolition with interest because of the Reorets nf rr>na(rn/?liftn (K..? they expect may bo dislosed. The marble for the interior fit lings was used with such lavishness as to make it practically a mansion of marble. The contractors have estimated that half of (he second-hand material into which the mansion will soon be transformed will be marble. It has long been known that Mr . Stewart among the many features of his extraordinary home, took the greatest pride in the qualtiy and quantity of the marble. It was the talk of all buildings at the time the house was put up. Kropi top to bottom he had the trimmings made of Italian marble, quarried especially for the mansion, and every piece was i jl. * - -- examined, it is said by the owno himself. All of the floors, evei that ol the basements, are of th same material. The demolitioi of the house, therefore, will b much the same as working a mar ble quarry. Most valuable of all the mar ble in the building, it was sail that in the six columns stundin in the hall. The builders sun yesterday that these could b matched with difficulty, as piece like them have not come frot: Italy in a long time. The fireplace are of that same kind of marble ornate with carving. Each Ore place, it is estimated, is worti $2,009, ami there is one in ever} room. The fact that even th floor is of marble shows the utte disregard that the builder ha< A* - A O 1 it . .1 tor cost,, oucn was me eiegatic of fhe place that some of tli workmen were awed by it pai ticularly when they assended am descended with their arms ful of old iron and lead pipe the wind ing stairs of marble that ru through the four stories. The work was mostly on th roof yesterday and it will b some time before the workme get to the first floor, where som of the past glories of the mansio seem to live yet in the pictur gallery and ballroom. Al through the* house the doorg ai of mahogany, which will go f a to swell tho value of the junl pile. Since the house wan upone* to the workmen the watchman a the door has been besieged b, applicants for admission. Ther were mora toan fifty such appli cants yesterday and they use' all kinds of pleadings to ge within. So valuable, however, i everything in the house that fe^ were admitted without a pa* from the contractors. Ther were some who came wth th idea of buying such things ??marble fireplace at a price a In tlo over its intrinsic value, bi cause of associations. The visitors yesterday wb gained admittance and wandero through the lower roomn inclnde sevoral workmen employed i the decoration of the house whe it was Luilt in 1863. One r them, who had decorated th ceiling In the library, gaid the he had waited for years for th opportunity that came yesterday and he examined the ceilin with interest to see how roue his work had been affected b time. Except for a little due and dirt he found it, ha said, al most as good as when he dofTe his overalls and left the plac years ago v. ith his work finish ed. Much curiosity was expressei yesterday as to what the famou old house was worth as junk, bu the price paid for it the contract ors refused to divulge. Sue deals are always speculative, an in this case it wan said the built] ings character and the valu some of the parts might have a souvenirs had been taken int consideration in fixing the prici which it was thought best t newp notrei.
