NATION AT IT AGAIN Colored Employee Attempts to Hlop IIor and Fight Ensues. Topeka, Kan., Feb. 5?Mrs Nation launched a crusade against the joints at an early hour thie inorning. She rose at 4.4(1 and soon afterward started out on a tour of joint smashing. Accompanied by Mrs. J. I' White and Miss Madeline South nrd, Bho attempted to enter a place at 830 Kansas avenue. The man on duty was taken unawares, but managed to disarm Mrs. Nation and bolt the door before any of the party could enter. Mrs Nation said her friends caught Iter arms and prevented her from going through the window. The next place visited was the "Senate,'' 406 Kansas avenue. The women entered without any resistance, but a colored man quickly seized Mrs Nation and ii ok her hatchet away. Some how in the scutllo she was struck on the right temple by the weap on, but tho blow did not disable her, and sho at once seized the hatchet carried by Mrs. White. She turned over two largo mar chines and smashed the glass in trout of each. She soon made a wreck of a large refrigerator and otter that turned her attention to tho liquor lixturesbehind tho bar. A keg of beer came in the way of her hatchet and the contents completely drenched the skirts ol M .t i iiy 1 At this juncture the colored poller fired ? revolver at the ceil ing to frighten the crusaders am) attracted tlie attention of the outsiders. Policeman Graham was attracted by the noise and escorted Mrs. Nation to the po lice station. Here Mrs Nation and her little band of followers held a short praise service and lectured those, in charge at the time. Her trial will come up today tor the disturbance she created yesterday afternoon, when she attempted to enter a joint at East Sixth street. Mrs Nation was booked as a "joint smasher." The others were released. Her case is con tinned till Thursday without bond, the charge preferred being "instituting a riot."' Mjrs Nation today issued the following proclamation to the "Ciiooi cnuaren oi lop^scB . "My Precious Children: I send you greeting and ask you to help mo destroy that which is on the streets and protected by the police and city officials to destroy my darlings. I want every one of you little ones to grab a rock and smash up the glass doors and windows of these hell holes. You will do your duty and enrol your names on pages of undying fame and place yourself on the side of God and humanity " Smi?- of hlo, Cllf of Toloifo, / ^ Colli) 17. t Frank J Oh* rvv makes onth that lie Is senior partner <.f Hie firm of F. Senator ltagsdale Uses Home IWaiii Language In Conuecfion With the State Hank Bond Cane. The Beuate today devoted a considerable part of kthe morning sossion debating the old state bank bond matter. It was proposed to appoint the supremo court a commission to decide the caso and adjudicate the claim. Senators Uraydon, Dean and Uagsdale opposed the bill. The latter was somewhat plain spoken, not to say sensational, in his remarks. He doclared that he could not understand why the governor had gone out of his way to recommend the payment of this claim. How was it, he asked, that this subject was in the messago at all ? lie believed that interested parties were behind it, and that is llOW if f*nt int.n fb<? ltincanrrn --- -- -- t-> - What right has the governor to talk to the legislature about "repudiation" when the legislature ha - twice decided there is no debt? That word is not the language of the governor, hut sounds much like that of attorneys. Talk about repudiation, he said, strong language must ho met by strong language and. in his opinion this scheme is little less than a steal. There are a lot of hungry lawyers about, hero trying to get into the treasury through this bill, and they seem to have influence enough to get into the governor's office. Senator llarnwell followed and said the governor had made the recommendation as to the payment of the bonds, because he thought it right. lie then went into an interesting history of the way the bond had been lost and how many of them had been re covered. t ~ il.- 1 :ii a i iid dim wan nui completed, but will be resumed tonight. In the house the appropriation bill was futher considered. The South Carolina college appropriation was put back at $58,000. After a lone debate, $100,000 was appropriated to the public schools. Mr J Caldwell Koberson wanted the money (riven to schools outside of incorporated towns, hut this was not acted on. The same amount was appropri ated last year in the house, but it failed to become law.
