Saturday, January 5, 1901. i? . . i It seems to be in the wind that an effort is to be made at the next session of the legislature to abolish the State farms. Wo hope such an effort will be made and that it will be successful. The convicts ought to be put to building and improving our public roads instead of making cotton in competition with the citizens. WHERE THE RESPONSIBILITY RESTS. After giving a detailed account of the circumstances of the tragic death of sheriff Kennedy, Wm. Kyle and John Dansby, which occurred in Abbeville last Saturday night, the Abbeville Press and Bauner makes the following observations which we endorse in toto : "While it is not for any man tt> place the responsibility for this and other tragedies that have occurred recently in this eounty, yet this newspaper believes that the utter disregard of human life arises from these causes : 1. The ease with which red handed slayers may get bail, and thus avoid even the inconvenience of a sojourn in prison. 3. The failure of juries to convict white men of the crime of murder. 3. In rare cases when white men with influential kin are convicted of assault on the person, the punishment is less for killing a mail than is inflicted on a negro for stealing a hog. 4. The ease with which influential friends or kindred of criminals can get. the ear of the Governor. The ends of justice are easily satisfied in such cases. The Solicitors need reeloction and the Judges mav not a/ care to incur the displeasure of anybody, by refusing to rocommond pardon or commutation. If our courts and juries would punish crime, we would have less of it. To punish the slayer of a fellow-man is a mercy to innocent men. To excuse one for murder is only to offer a premium for another." Chicago Physiologist Claim that it Dfnkes the Heart Beat. ^ From the Chicago Record j Experiments on turtles have t convinced Dr. Jacques Loeb aud ,] l'rof. D. J. Lingle, physiologists \ at tbe University of Chicago, that i common salt in the blood makes p the heart beast. What is more, J they claim that not only does salt keep the heart in actiou, but that it possibly may cause the * heart to beat again atter it has 8 once stopped. * For several months DeLoeb and y Prof. Lingle have been experi- j mooting to secure the necessary ^ results to prove their theory, t They have conducted a series ol (] delicate scientific tests bearing I upon the pulsation of the heart, and today made public the an- 'i nouncement that the results they obtained had verified beyond a ii di ubi their theory that the pies- * once of salt in the blood caused j, the beats of the heart. In the ? experimental work conducted by the two physiologists turtles were h used almost exclusively. After ^ snipping oil* the head in as humane a way as possible the lower part of the shell was removed and the heart taken possession of. Instead of taking the organ j as a whole, a small strip from P one of tho ventricles was used. < The blood was removed and a c piece of flosh suspended in dilTer g ent solutions. In this way their v conclusions wero adduced. v Dr. Loeb and Prof. Lingle j claim that the fallacy of the t early belief that the heart beats ] because it is full of blood was quickly shown when a strip of the turtle's heart was suspended in a solution of sodium chloride and a regular Beries of beats be * gau. Separated from all nerve connections the lifeless strip of i heart muscle responded perfctly to the pressure of the salty solo tion. . . I r or weeks the experimenters ] worked to ascertain what qual- | ities salt possessed to cause this I rythmic beating of the heart that were not possessed by calcium or potassium, the salt of which enters into the composi tion of the blood. They found a solution of the problem in the fact that the action of sodium chlorido was due to the peculiar character of the sodium iones In making the investigation they discovered that a pure sodium chloride solution was destructive of heart tissues and that by mixing calcium and potassium solutions with the sodium solutions they found that the poisonous effects of the sodium chlorido were destroyed. i>i-:aF.tf.sm ( Ainno rEnci'iii: by lon? 1 applications as they cannot t reach the diseased portion of t ha car. \ Thare is only one way to cure deaf- : neea, mad that is by constitutional remedies.
