' White Barber Waylaid ah He YVok Uoing Peacefully to HIh Home and Wife. Indianapolis, Ind.t Dec. 26.?A special to the Sentinel from Rockport, Ind., says: Two negroes, Jim Henderson and Bud Rowland, who waylaid, brutally murdered and robbed ilollie Simons, a white barber, early this morning were lynched the jail yard by a mob of 1,000 freinzied citizens tonight. The negroes were arrested early and although Rowlands clothing was bloodstained, the men claimed they were innocent of the crime, [nthe meantime,Sheriff Clemen*, of Union county, Ky., arrived with a trained bloodhound in response to a telegraphic, Riimmona. When the dog was placed on j the trail ha followed it until he !reaohod the house where Rowland lived, *ix blocks from tho scene of the murder, and went baying to the bed the negro had oocupiad. This was enough for the frienzied populace. Within a few miuutes a mob of a thousand howling, blood-thirsty citizens, with sledge hammers, ropes and guns were running io I th? i* 1 HhoriflT A nrl?rann o rwl his two deputies made a stand and attempted to protect the prisoneri. The officers were seized by the loaders of the mob, who disarmed them. The sheriff waa then locked in a room aud placed under guard, but ho stoutly re fuaed to give up the keys or tell where the prisoners were hidden. Failing to get the keys, the mob made a determined but uneuo eessful attempt to broak in the jail door. By this time the would be lynchers were in a perfect frenzy and securing a telegraph pwie they used it ac a battering ram aud caved in the side wall of the jail. The door of Howard's cell was then quickly broken in with sledgo hammers and h? was dragged from the jail to the east side of the court yard, where i a nooso was placed around hisj neck, lie was given time to make! a statement in which he implies I ted Jim Henderson and another1 negro. Rowland then begged piteously for mercy, but the mob rwift i Iv swum? the confeR^ed murderer to h tree and riddled hia bod.v with bullet*. As was customy with f him he carried the day's receipts 1; at his place of business. The b negroes were aware of this and ll evidently laid their plans accord t ingly. a Crouching behind a fence they n awaited their victim, jumped d from their place of concealment d and attacked him from behind, f striking him over the head with a n heavy club with a large nail b driven into the end of it. Al- n though terribly beaten Simmons o made a desperate fight and bis cries and struggles soon attracted n two boys, who went to his assist- o ance, but they were a moment n too late. The victim of the two a negroes having succumbed to the e terrible beating lay dead at their 1 faet. d The murderers then drove the o would-be rescuers away aud ac- a complished their original design f ?that of robbery?securing a bag containing something over $40 e from the prostrate form of their r victim and made their escape. Simons was terribly beaten; hie skull was crushed in, his head and face beaten into a pu'p.
