Acting Comptroller Kane Explains
How Alrord Operated.
Washington, Oct. 24?T. L*.
Kane, the acting comptroller of
the currency, today gave out a
statement regarding the defalcation
in the First National bank
of New York, which says:
"During the progress of the
examination by Bank Examiner
Hans, Oct. 9, of the First National
bank, Assistant Cashier Backus
discovered that the note and exchange
teller, Alvoid, was short
in his cash to an amount which
_?.ha8 eiivcfi. boen found to be $600,?

"His thefts have boen going on
for a long time. The plan of con

out of the morning mail of which

number of cash items to cover
the aggregate amount of his defalcation
and add them to the
exchange for the clearing house
received during the preceding
day. The examination of the ex
changes at the timo of examination
showed the total amount
correct, but $C>00,000 ^ie
items had been taken from the
morning receipts and listed with
previous days' exchanges, the
amount of morning additions being
reduced that much so that
the sum of the two aggregated
the correct amount. A change in
the slip by Alvord later in the
day caused inquiry and compar
ison to be made at the clearing
house, when it was discovered
that tho two items of "previous
days' exchange" and "morning
additions" did not correspond
with the list checked by the ex
aminer, and a count of the cur
rent days' cash and cheek in
hands of the third teller revealed
a shortage of $000,000.
