THE STATE FARMS. Prom the Hickory Sun. Much was said in the last campaign about the State farms being run on an extravagant basis and facts and figures wore brought, into evidence, to show the truthfulness of the statements. The people have become stirred up over certain statements made by candidates, on the stump, in regard to these farms and the question is asked daily, "What shall we do with t ?> > <> ~\\r? uui tjiaici lainio ; kj uriiu y c in running every branch of our State government, on an economical basis, and if the State farms are a dead expense to the State then it becomes the duty of those in power, as representatives of the poople, to disposo of these farms either by sale or lease. This is the only remedy as we seo it. Then, the question arises, what shall be done with the convicts which have been employed on these farms? There is no employment to give them within the walls of the penitentiary. Some have suggested that these convicts bo worked by the various counties, r*n t.lm r*nV?lif? rnnrls pnnli cnnnt.v using their own convicts. This would not work, as a universal rule, because some of the lower counties of the State do not want the chain gang system since they don't need them, as they claim, on their public roads or highways. Another suggestion, which strikes us as being a good one, is to use the convicts in opening up tho creeks and rivers of the State. The lower counties of the Stp.te we are sure could take no possible exception, to this suggestion, since there is no section which needs drainage so much as the lower part of the State. This plan would open up thousands and thousands of acres of rue most iertne tanas in tne State, which is now useless to the owners, and will also remove all causes for malaria and fevers which are so common along the various streams and water courses of the State. These suggestions are thrown out for the benefit of the public. It Saved Ills I. eg. P. A.
