LANCASTER ENTERPRISE. Published tvery Wednesday and Saturday ?T die Enterprise Publishing Company A. J, CLARK Editor, wn? imiT $ i .uu Six Months 50 cts fhroo Months 25 cts In Advance. Saturday, Oct. 20, 1900. The strike of the coal miners has come to an end. Their demands were granted and they will return to their work Monday. Things do not go the same way all the time. A change has come over Lancaster county jurors at last. A vordict of "guilty" was brought in by the jury Tuesday in acaso charging violation of the dispensary law, the first conviction ever had in this county under the dispensary - law, though there have been numerous cases brought to the attention of the court. It is not fair to presume that among all the cases charged with vio lating the dispensary law heretofore none of them were guilty. The chances are that some of them were guilty. The trouble was prejudice against the law, which we are glad to see passing away. The law should be enforced as long as it remains upon the statute books. The new road between Camden and Sumter was formally inspected by the railroad commissioners this week and double daily schedules are now being operated, the first train leaving Camden at 6.45 a. m. and returning at 12.01. The afternoon train leaves Camden at 3 . o'clock and reaches Sumter at 0.15. The distance is thirty miles, and Sumter and Lancaster are several hours closer together than heretofore. An effort is being made to have an amendment to the constitution passed at the approachinrr ornn Ami alAPfinn ? O for the removal of the constitutional restriction fixing the limit of taxation at 8 per cent of the taxable value. The amendment is to apply only to the cities of (Charleston, Columbia, Rock Hill and Florence. Those cities desire to exceed the 8 per cent limit in order to raise money to establish and maintain water works, sewerage, electric lights and gas plants. The argument is that they are a necessity. That may be, and whether it is or not, we see no good reason for not allowing those cities to tax themselves as much as they please provided the taxpayers vote the tax. But it does seem that a community whose taxes are more than 8 per cent would not be a desirable place to live and own nronertv. and t.hnt j x j y ? ? ? therefore the progress of these cities would be impeded rather than facilitated by the adoption of the proposed amendment. Mark Hanna said, "there are no trusts in this country." Referring to trusts Mr. Stevenson, the Democratic vice-Presidential candidate said the other day : "The trust evil is the greatest evil of this country. In three year9 over six hundred trusts have grown up, with a eapital of $10,000,000,000, competition has been cut off and there is no chance for small capital. You have been told there are no trusts or that the trusts were good trusts. I am inclined to think the good trusts, like the good indians, are all dead. When they talk of four more years of prosperity, I ara in favor of four more years of prosperity for the common people and not for the trusts. The growth of these corporations has been so alarming that there must be stringent laws against them. Into whose hands will you put the enactment of these laws? Under whom have they grown or who is opposed to the trusts and to whom are the trusts opposed, the Democratic party? The interests of our families and of tlio country are not identical with the interests of the men who have built up these enormous corporations."
