Irtist II. A. Brown Shot to Death in His Bed. Paul K. JJratton Charged With the Crime. 'he State. Rock Hill, Sept. 15.?A terri >lo tragedy, behind which it is upposed there lies a scandal, vas enacted here this morning at ibout 1:30 o'clock. Air. 11. A. Irown (Harry Brown) the well:nown painter, was shot twice vhile in his bed at his home, rhe deed was done by a wellIressod man who called up Mr. Irown's brother in law, Mr. Neel, ind asked to see Brown about ome painting. When the door vas opened and Mr. Neel started >ack to wake Brown the man ollowed him in and as soon as le caught sight of his victim, uslied up and at close range ired two balls into him. The irst shot struck in the side and anging down lodged in the bowls. The second shot was diverted >y Mr Neel, who caught the asastin's arm and disarranged his lim. This shot shattered Brown's rm. The man then rushed out, umped into the waiting carriage tid was driven rapidly away. There was another white man in he carriage. Brown died at G 1'clock this morning. Brown was an Englishman idiose family is good. Ilis brothirs are artists of ability and have or 20 or more years been con lected with *the "Uraphic," Black and White" and other ligh class journals. Twelve years igo he married Miss .Jennie Neel i daughter of Mr. l'reston A. ?Ieei and a grand daughter ol len. Win. Neel of Mecklenburg ounty, N. U, She with lour chilIren survives him. The inquest was begun today. U ihe adjournment no direct vidence aa to identity of Brown's layer had come out. Thecircum tantial evidence was sucli that Acting Coroner Beckham 'phoned he sheriff at Yorkville and oriercd the arrest ol Mr. Paul 11. *ratton and a colored driver tamed Will Caldwell. It can.e ?ut that Thursday night Brown lad been in Yorkville and while here had dillicully with Paul $ratton's brother, John S. Brat on. This morning at 1 o'clock 'aul Bratton came across the ountry in a closed surry, driven >y Caldwell, and upon reaching icre made inquiry lor Brown's esidence. (Jaldwell also said Mr. Iratton came to see Painter Irown and that ho uhad to see lim tonight." The carriage con aining Mr. Bratton and another nan, whose identity has not been tscertained, drove rapidly in the lirection of Brown's residence ibout the time ot the shooting tnd in a halt hour or less return id and drove rapidly away from own towards Yorkville. The vitness who had talked with Mr. Sratton and knew him, also saw he carriage return and recog lized it as the same and the lriver to bo (Jaldwell. The coroner adjourned the in [uest until tomorrow at 10 >'clock to have the jury hear the ividenco ot the colored driver, Jaldwell. In Brown's ante mor em statement he said the shootng wa6 done by one ot' three nen, viz : Amry Crockett, dale >r Bratton himself. (Evidently eferiing to ,Jno. 8. Bratton with vhopi it is understood he had a lifficultv Thursday night). Later itter those in the room had ipokt n of I'aul Bratton being in own, Brown was asked three imes if Paul Bratton shot him. fiach time he made a sound conlidered by the witnesses as being in affirmative answer. A. P. ARREST MADE. Yorkville, Sept.'15.?Mr. Paul It. Bratton was arrested here to day. (i. T. S. LATER. News ami Courter. Rock Ilill, Septemhei 16.? The inquest over the body of H. A. Brown was resumed this morning at 10 o'clock. Will Caldwell, the negro who was identified as the driver from Yorkville, was sworn. Tie swore that the two men whom he drove from Yorkville were Paul Bratton and John S. Bratton, that lie drove the carriage to several places in Rock Hill in search of Brown's residence. When they found Brown's house the carriage was stopped about one nundred yards from the house. The two Brat tons went in. In about ten minutes he heard "two shots." The men then came hack. When asked if anything was said by either of the Messrs. Brattons, witness said: "Mr. Johnnie said he had shot Brown." This statement was repeated. The matter was left to the jury, and they returnod a verdict in about half an hour. This was that "H. A. Brown came to his death by a pistol shot from the hands of Paul R. Bratton and that John S. Bratton was accessory thereto." The jury was composed of the following men : C W. Frew, foreman ; J. M. HcFadden, S. M. Cash, J. B. Fudge, W. S. Nicholson, T. P. Roddey, W. W. Alexander, J. F. It is evident from th? verdict that the jury belioved that the two Brattons commit ted the deed, but that they did not beliove the negro's state inent as to what John S. Brat ton said, or believed that statement to have been made to mis lead the negro, who being or the spot would be an important witness. Caldwell .Jso denied having made the statement - sworn to by Policeman Jonkim near the Carolina Hotel not long before the killing Mr, Neel's evidence as to the appearance of the man who did the shooting and his dress leach to the belief that Paul Bratton was me actor. Jenkins affirms , his statement as to his conver sation with the negro. Warrants were issued by Mag istrato T. C. Beckham, who is ' acting coroner, for the two Brat 1 tons, and Caldwell is held tc ' bail in the sum of $500 as r * material witness. Messrs. W B. DeLoach, W. B. McCaw anc 1 W. W. Lewis attended the in quest as representing the Brat tons. It has been announced that they will apply at once foi 1 bail for thoir clients. It is always expected thai , such an occurrence will develop a scandal. There are rumors floating in regard to this affair, but no statement indicating such condition can be had, nor does the testimony before the coroner give the slightest clue to the reason for such an act. Neither Paul Bratton nor John Bratton has attended the inquest, and no statement from them in regard to the occurrence has been made. If any justification exists it must be brought out in another Court. iCASTER ING an d STORE Proprietor. st Opened Up C, SHOES and UNDERlblic to inspect them.
