Tar Heel Red Shirts Resent Mary Ann's Interference. The State. Wilmington, N. C., July 25. Jack King, an unlicensed Baptist preacher or exhorter, was taken by a party of red shirts in the Fifth ward of the city last night and given a ducking in a horse fountain corner Fifth and Castle streeets. He was charged with having distributed anti-amendment and Populistic campaign literature in that ward Monday for Senator Marion Butler. A promise was exacted from King that lie "would not do so any more." He went before Justice of the Peace J. J. Fowler this morning and caused the arrest of two of the red shirts, Tlios. M. Simmons and William Branch on the charge of assault ami battery. The justice said evidence showed the accused to be guilty and asked them what they had to say for themselves. Simmons said that bethought it "110 crime to wash a dirty henchman of Butler like King." King addressed the court, saying that ho thought Red Shirts did not realize what they did and asked that the court not inflict any punishment. It is thought King asked the court's leniency for fear of re taliation, in fact, had lie persisted in prosecution, Red Shirts would have made it too warm for him to stay in town. Red Shirts on the Wilmington and Weldon railroad today were on the lookout for Senator Marion Rutler, who was advertised to speak at Willard a few miles from Rose Hill, where the registrar trial demonstration was yesterday. He did not come, however, but sent R. B. Davis, secretary of the State Populists executive committee, who spoke to about 75 Populists. Is it any wonder, then, after ? their investigation of the misera- r ble farce of prohibition in other state that the agents of the com uiittee ot 50 were disgusted with f prohibition and came to South a Carolina expecting nothing from J1 the dispensary law. With some criticisms, however, after this in- " vestigation, they summed up the situation as follows: ,1 "While the unbiased observer o cannot tail to be impressed by the charges wrought by a system which has closed the saloons and ' nearly suppressed the liquor j tratlic, thousands remain ^blinded t them. The political opponents of , the dispensary authorites most t often deny that aught good has been accomplished. Iloyt is wise, if he expects f to be governor of South Carolina, not to rest his chances entirely with those who support the farce ' of prohibition. < The race is bet ween Colonel ( Iloyt and (iovernor McSweeney. If you want to overthrow the dispensary and instal prohi- [ bition and have free li<|iior vote t for Col. Iloyt. If you are sat- ' isfied with the present system, then vote for Gov.
