It is estimated by some that this year may terminate even better than tho famous 1884, which as never been surpassed tor the enormous number of mackerel taken. Efforts have been made to ostimato the number of fish in a single school, but there is no way to ascertain whether such calculations are even approximately correct. By some it i6 ascertained that a large school ot . mackerel contains about a million barrels which exceeds more than twice the largest catch ot the entire senson. In 1S31 more than 400,000 barrels wore secured , by American fishermen, and this 5 was the greatest number obtained ' until 1884. Since then there has been a constant decrease, until last year the catch was less than 50,000 barrels. Taking advantage of this condition of affairs Ireland ami Norway and also Holland oxported a great many mackorel into this country, but, owing to a peculiar manner foreign fishermen have of dressing their fish, the latter do not sell very readily. There is always a large demand for mackerel, as they are regarded as among the finest of Bej fi-h. therefore the prices vary with the supply. They have been known to sell for $3 a barroll, while they have also ranged as high as $33 dollars a barrel, but at present owing to the reports ol large catches, they are ehoapor. Regarding the habits of mack erel, there is nothing definite to be said. In the summer months thev remain near the North At lantic coast, sturting oarly in the J I _ itr /1 i * *. ? i I kouhoii on v;ape nauerns and | reaching Labrador in the autumn. From this point thoy disappear, and no one has yet been able to | say positively where they go. It j j is probable, however, that at this j season they go into deep water. They are also found in small i numbers in the waters of the Ku I ropean Atlantic, including the | Baltic sea and the German ocean. Not only do thoy contribute' to tho food supply cf" the human ?| race, but they seem to be garded '! as choice morsels by predatory fish, but in spite of the numerous checks put upon their production '! they do not appear to decrease 'in number to any alarming ex ! tent i I 4Ji i 11 ' ' urat i mn mil Tii?D i>r, n 1 A Hi LA1H1'AIMN ItMM).
