Hundreds ot Travelers Tirol Up At Different Points on Rail* roads. Jackson, Miss., April 19.?A special from McComb City states that 700 passengers brought in by the Illinois Central are tied up at that place waiting for the first train out for New Orleans. The officials are unable to say wheu they will be able to get a train through, as over nine miles of track has disappeared beneath the water just below Chatawa. Further south swamps and lowlands are rapidly filling up with backwater, which threatens to submerge the tracks. Pearl river has advanced eight inches since noon and continues to rise at a rapid rate. Farmers' houses and negro cabins in the lowlands between here and Pearson station are in imminent danger, and if the overflow continues to spread at the present rate they will have to move out at once. ( The weather is threatening tonight. Meridian, Miss., April 19.? It will he three and possibly four days before the Northeastern, the Alabama Great Southern, the Southern and the Alabama and Vicksburg railroads and the Mobile and Ohio can resume business through this section. The washouts were more disastrous than the officials anticipated. A million dollars, it is believed, will not cover the damages to these roads from floods and suspension of business. A gentleman reached this city today from a waterbound Mobile and Ohio passenger train at Quitman, having ridden through the country. Ho reports the passengers faring well, through the hospitality of the Quitman citizens and the efforts of the road. The train has been ' at a standstill, surrounded by water, three days and three nights. A heavy rain is falling tonight. Mobile, Ala., April 19.?Rain lu?s fallen in a steady downpour all day, and it is reported to be general throughout this portion or tue south. 1 ho railroads are having groat trouble. The ' total amounts 1over three inches. It seems that the rains have been general. Yesterday the (Jongaree began tc? boom and at (J p. m, it was 17 feet above low water. At about 10 o'clock it was 22 feet and rising rapidly. The weather bureau sent out warnings yesterday. If the river goes much higher many of the low farm lands already 'planted will bo Hooded ami the crops destroyed. The electric railway plant was shut down last evening. During the evening the false work at the Seaboard's new bridge was swept away, Dial nothing of value was lost. The heaviest loss is the time it will take to replace the false work so that the building of Hie spans can continue. In the city, on Lady and (jervais streets, where the Seaboard crosses, the new culverts were not secure enough to stand the volume of water and bad breaks have occurred. At the Washing ton street crossing the earth was washed from behind the new re taining wall now being built and carried into the cut. The water covered the track in the cut. All along the walls of the cut bad washouts occurred. This means another delay for the Seaboard. On the several railroads running out of the city bad washes were reported, but tho section forces were on the lookout for 1 them and no delays of trains te- " suited,?The State. Rail Road Traffic Stopped and Great Damage Done by The Heary Rainfall. Memphis, Tenn., April 18.? Reports from the overflowed districts in Mississippi are to the elTect that large forces of men are at work on the road beds and it is believed trains will be running through to New Orleans by night. Meridian, Miss., April 18.?The flood situation remains unchanged in regard to railroad traffic. The trains with the exception of the M. <fc O. north remain annulled indefinitely. Laurel, on the northeastern road, is reported completely submerged. The much larger streams throughout the State continue to rise. The bodies of five flood victims were recovered tljis morning. Search for the others continues. A passenger train is reported waterbound on the Mobile & Ohio road near Quitman, Miss. It is thought the 35 passengers will be relieved in a few hours. The swollen rivers ami streams in the flooded districts are receding. Jackson, Miss., April 18.?delated specials from all sections of the State indicate that the three days of flood have wrought dam age greatly in excess of the first estimates, especially to growing crops. The Illinois Central is again tied up by a freight train which tumbled over j he tracks this morning and the Alabama A* Vicksburg is tied up at Baker's creek and also Pearl river. The Natchez division of the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley road will not be able to resume regular traffic for several days on account of missing bridges. Laborers are being recruited to complete the repairs which so far have been only temporary.
