There is a tendency on the pai of some cotton groweis to conRic er favorably plans for selling i advance the crop which they ej pe?t to raise this season, an some newspapers have advise them to try it. In regard to th proposition that Southern farn era should sell on a basis of Ne York futures for September an October delivery their crops c cotton not vet nlanted Mr Alfm B. Shepperson writes as follow in the Manufacturers' Kecord : "No farmer could sell his cro on the basis of prices for Septem ber and October delivery utiles he agreed to deliver it duriu those months. Ho could delive only a small proportion of hi crop by that tune, as pickin usually goes og until Decemhe and sometimes much later. II could only sell with safety fo delivery in November and I)? comber, and New York future for these months are nearly hal a cent lower than for Soptembe delivery. The present price fo November delivery would lcav the farmer, after paying freigh commissions and other charges about 7 cents per pound for mid dling cotton. This should not b regarded a very tempting pric? since it has been exceeded durin every calendar year with onl one exception since 1820. "Should the farmer sell now f'c delivery next fall or winter an ^ ^ ? r *1 1 1 J - "> |;i iurs iiciimp mtMl h f I (> 11 I (1 H<1 VailC from any reason, he would hav to make a deposit of money equs to the advance, and the raising c this money might prove incor venient and expensive. If th f? rmer should sell more than hi crop turned out to he, he wotil then have to buy of his neighboi to make up the quantity. In th event of higher prices ruling 8 that time than ho had sold at, h might thus suffer a considerabl loss, besides having to part wit all of his own crop at a lowe price than his neighbors were r< ceiving. "o <v "If, from the coi^vfaun of h crop late in the ummer, th farmer should fc^i r?r*sonabl confident of making '200 bales r cotton, it would be wise, perhap to Rell 100 bales for November ( December delivery against h crop if the pr,'ce was sntitfoctnr This would b safe and r?rfe? u! legitimate, anu is freque^yly dor through Southejyjrfactbrs.
