Between The States. i - LOSSES IN FIFTY GREAT 1 RATTLES. ft "The Whole Rritieh Nation Must * Have Fallen in a Fit" Had it i Suffered Such Mortality. r The United States, says the ( New York Sun, is a much younger , nation than Great Britain, never) thelesfl it has had greater experi ence of real war and imbibed a ' deeper comprehension of all it in1 volves than the nation whose "drum beat is heard around the ? world." In the "butcher's bill" i the civil war would swallow up a > dozen such wars as that of the Crimea, or the Peninsular cam | paigns, with Waterloo throwu in. The British forces were brought to a dead standstill by half their numbers, much as the Union forces were by the first Bull liun, which, by the way, was a greater "battle" than anything we have 1 yet seen in South Africa. Yet i Bull Run was but a small affair r compared with at least 30 of the subsequent actions of the civil > war. , It is plain now to both north and south that northern power ought not to have been utterly paralyzed in the Virginia theatre by the small Bull Run reverse, nor should it have suffered de feat at all on that field. Both were the results of a single fault which we see repeated day after day by the British in South Afri ; ca?the shortcomings of leader [ ship. If they can overcome it as the north did the British may yet , win. These are the only particu lars in which there is a parallel [ between the American civil war 1 and the Boer-British campaign. ' Correspondents from time to time quote losses of various com mands in the civil war in specific engagements in comparison with ' British losses in their affairs with the Boers. It therefore appears to be worth while to tabulate 50 of the more important engagements - of the civil war with the losses in killed And wounded, only omit tine thp missing and prisoners. Numbers of the missing however, in nearly every buttle were killed or wounded, but no* so report d I Prisoners captured are omitted } because they tell no ta ?? ot the destructive powers of either bel ligent. Vas* numbers of prisonersare sometimes secured at v-?r\ little exoenoe of bloodshed, as a? ' Harper's Ferrv : BATTI.KS. KII.I.KII W<<ITM<ICII | t'lco i. C <:i. Union. Con.
