Many have been anxious to ascertain tor a lone: timeinforma t.ion as to the total uet profits from the State's liquor business since the establishment of the dispensary in 1893. This infor mation is at. last, given by the present. State board of control in its introductory to its annual report, and the amount is $1,706,704.41. The statement contained in the report referred to is as follows : The Tillman-Traxler administration, covering a period of 19 months, made a net profit of..$ 125,328 40 The Evans-Mixon administration made in 14 months $ 313,974 08 Thirty-three months of the administration of the rttate board of oontrol up to December 31,1898, netted $ 853,219 95 The past year's management of the board, as shown in this report, the profits were $ 414,181.84 Total net profits since July, 1893 $1,700,704 27 The State board remarks: 4>The above shows that the in crease in net profits has been rapid and continuous; and besides, the business is now on the best basis that it has ever been. "At tlie close of business on Dec. 31,1899, our liabilities for purchases were $121,208 18 "Cash in State treasury. 143,12100 "Exccis in cash assets over liabilities $ 21,012 82 Add to tins the stock on hand paid for and we have for the benefit of the school tniul $514,379.90. "We have paid- in cash to the school fund the past year $75,000, and the indications are that we can pay into it the ensuing year $200,000 or more." The hoard then states that so far this year $100,000 has been paid to the school fund and yet the institution has sufficient funds to meet all outstanding obligations. The hoard also states : "Wo are gratified t<> be able to state that this has been the most successful year financially of the institution since its beginning, and ask your most careful examination of its financial status as shown heiein The board calls attention to the fact that the increase in net profits this vear over those of 1808 was $113,637.11. The Boer's laagers are again full of men whe returned from upper Tugela. The Boers have also takeu a position in the hills, near Colenso. A great force of reinforcements is apparently arriving lrom the Transvaal. Strong bodies alse pass between here and Potgeiters drift. Spearman's Camp, January 25 (delayed)?The Boers are rejoicing, though it is certain that they lost heavily. The British medical corps ascended Spion Kop. The Boers met them half way after consenting to the re moval of the wounded. The scene on the summit is fearful. Stretcher hearers have bee* busy the greater part of the day. London, Jan. 31.?Buller reports that the British lost 139 killed at Spion Kop. These losses are chiellv confined to the Lancashire regiments. The Imperial Light Horse and Thierneycroft Horse lost 392 wounded, 00 missing and 46 prisoners. Buller reports that Thierneycroft was the officer who ordered the retirement from Spion Kop. lie says his personal gallantry saved the diflicultsituation. Early on the 24th, under a loss of 10 per cent, he directed the defence with conspicuous courage and ability throughout the day. He is not to be blamed whatsoever for withdrawing.
