There was unusual interest developed,in t??e case, and the , t courtroom was crowded all day long. The attorneys were: Solicitor Sense f'?r the prosecution and J. J. Burnett and Duncan & Sandors for the defendant. A number of witnesses were i : T " ? examined, ana tne course of the rial fr>ra start to finish was lively and interesting. Tne following is a collection of facts regarding the case: Ahout five years ag ?, Cora .fenkins, a 13-year old whi'e girl from an orphanage in Ashevillc. N. C., came to Spartanburg to ma?e her home with the Misses Morris, two lderly maiden ladies, who live near Cedar P Springs She remained at the ' x homo of th^se ladies for two years, at the end of which time she WOllt, tn t.lli- Iii.mn "f J. C. Meares, an instructor in the State Institute for "lie Deaf and Blind at Cedar Springs, to accept duties as a domestic. The girl a as received with good recommendations as to her character and industry as a worker. She remained at the home of Mr. Meares for nearly two years. When the condition of the girl was discovere I Prof. Meares immediately shipped her from his house, and she drifted to the county parish, where sho gave birth to a child. After the ^ birth of the babe, the young * . mother asked Prof Meares for / the support of the child, claim ing that he was the father, and that he had taken advantage of her under his own root.
