O., Dec. 7.?The State conference of the Methodist Episcopal church witnessed one of the greatest scenes in its history at its session here this morn ing, when its preacher" and lay members contributed $14,000 to the twentieth century educational fund. The rapidity and spirit with which the subscriptions were made were ilmont marvelous. This importan' matter was made the special order of business for 11 o'clock. When the hour arrived the church was filled with anxious listeners. London, Dec. 6.?The budget o news from Ladysmith, which a! fited here today brings the bii tory of the belegaured garrison t Nov. 29. *In spite of the ruraor of the movement upon the par of the Boers, the stories receive! show that the garrison, althoug still strong, is suffering from con finement, restricted diet and in creasing volume of the Boe artillery from western defences. Dispatches relate that th Boers have discovered the mos vulnerable points of the garrisoi and the shelling is becoming dis agreeably effective. Rations ar reduced and there is a great dea of sickness. Nevertheless, th troops in every way are prepar ing to meet the assault which i is anticipated the Boers will carr; out in their final effort to reduc the city. The belief is current ii Ladysmith that the Boers ar prepariug for retrograde move ment after another attack. Sev eral bodies of burghers wer reported on November 28th to b moving in the direction of Drak ensburg range, while on Novetn ber 29th detachments were ot served journeying northwar with wagona.
