Maysville, Ky., Dec. 6.?Riohard Coleman, colored, confessed murderer of Mrs. James Lash brook, wife of his employer, expiated his crime in daylight at the hands of a mob, consisting of thousands of citizens, by burning at the stake after suffering undeJ scribable torture. The dreadful spectacle occurred on peaceful cricket grounds on .the outskirts of this city. Just two months ago Richard Coleman, the trusted employe of Farmer James Lashbrook, murdered the woman who had been his benefactor. Lftshbrook had driven to Maysville and returned, when Coleman asked her to enter the cabin to look at some work at which he had been engaged. The negro locked the door on the inside Mrs. Lashhrook became frightened and screamed. Coleman struck her on the head, knocking her N down, tout not stopping her cries. He then seized a razor and cut her throat llo picked up the bleeding body and placed it on F the bed. lie then left the room, but returning, heard her still groaning and with an axo he stuck her repeatedly on the head until he was sure she was dead. The negro washed the blood from his hands and clothing and wont to where Mr. Lashbrook was at work in the field and told him that ho had better come to house, as some one ha l killed his wife. That night, however, at Maysville, a partial confession was obtained, and, knowing the result if that fact B should become known, the officers Ml quietly took him to Covington, HL K;.for safe keeping. Ho was 9Bl indicted for the murder. Shortly after his incarnation at Covington, ^ he made a complete confession of his crime to the jailer. He said he expecte to die, but he dreaded the ver geance of a mob. When he wa handcuffed on leaving the jail i Covington he was almost paralvz ed and had to be assisted to tli patrol wagon. On entering th train he seemed unable to si down until one of the guard forced him into a seat. Sheriff Perrin while en route to Maysville, ha been informed that a mob wa awaiting the arrival of the trail at the depot and he hastily pre pared for it by swearing in depi ty sheriffs. As the train pulle slowly into the old station th mob formed on both sides in tw long but closely huddled crowdi Armed men stationed themselve at the platforms of all the car ami warned the frightened pa< sengers to remain quiet and nc to interfere. Cooley was shot in the thigh and Cornwell wa? shot in the stomach. His wound will ; probably prove latal. The ehooting was done by one Howard, an illicit distiller. The governor instructed the sheriff of Greenville to arrest Howard at all hazards. , K THE CONSTABLE DIES. Constable Cornwell, who was shot in a fracas in Greenville, is dead. Howard, the whiskey dealer who also was riddled by bullets, # cannot live. The following special was received by The Record today : Greenville, Dec. 7.?Dispensary Constable John B. Cornwell, who was shot in the stomach by moonshiner George Howard in Tuesday's battle, between moonshiners and constables, died at 2 o'clock this morning. Howard,who was shot five times by Cornwell, is a'sodead. C'lnet l 'unstable La Far was heard from last night, and in a telegram he stated that he did not expect Cornwell to live, as peritonitis had set in. lie said, however, that the constable might last a week. Cornwell was from Chester, hut has been under Chief La Far. lie was sent for duty in Chester some time hack, hut was recently ordered hack to (Jreenville. This was done by his chief, and the disposition of his men was not a matter to he reported to the state officials here. Mrs. It.
