'ijr The organization of a fertilizer trust is thus referred to by the Jefferson County Banner: There are trusts and trusts. Some of them have so remote an effect upon the people that their influence is hardly felt. Others again control products that every- g body is obliged to have and their * j weight becomes a very real thing. ' Just at present, we wish to call the attention of the farmers to a trust which is seeking to control. ^ the manufacture and sale of conv* :<y mereial fertilizers in this and several other Southern iStat.es. It mav not be called hv that name, t * 1 . >; 7??!M| but a trust under any other name would bo just as oppressive Wo learn th.it a company has been formed under the name of the Virginia Carolina Chemical Company, which will practically control the output of fertilizers in Virginia, the Carolina*, Georgia arid probably other States. The capitol stock is stated to be $24,- ,v 000.000. This combination controls and operates all the factories in Charleston, except possibly one small enterprise. It also controls all the factories in Savannah except one of moderate capacity. The price of all kinds of fertilizers have already advanced fit) to 40 per cent on the last year's prices. And that, this early in the season. There is no telling to what price guano will he advanced. This trust has the power, as they virtually control the market,# to ?? r it. . r i i iorce ino ianners 10 pay exnorbitant prices for their products. Tho Banner would advire thefarmers to take their time about ^ buying their fertilizers this winter, and not pay the arbitrary and unjust prices fixed by this corporation. Every bushel o^ cotton seed should be kept. By beginning in time, saving their cotton seed and making as much compost and . home made fertilizers as possible, they will in a largo measure be relieved from the necessity of nuying any ot the "trust" goods at all. Sometimes a trust has the people at its mercy controlling some necessary article which they can not replace at home. Hut in the case at hand this ' trust should he taught a lesson. If the farmers prepare in time to 4 manufacture their own fertilizers, m tho combination will soon meet the fate the the "one hoss shay'* and the farmers themselves will save a large part ol their annual | guano bill. | Hot dome on the (Iriri Iron. The Camden and Lancaster boys met here on Thanksgiving in a hotly contested game of football which was attended by a very large and enthusiastic audience. 'The Lancaster boy a* hitd ' never been in a game, and during , the first half could not nut lin a very strong resistance to Cam* den's skillful and brilliant work ; ! but in the sec ml half our boys Caught on to the game, ami kept their opponents from scoring. The game was marked by clean honest pay, each side simply doing ; its beat to win.
