Morrison, in tlio Face of Overwhelming Evidence ot his Guilt, Declares his Innocence of Wile Murder ami Meets Death Resignedly?The Story ot his Monstrous Crime. Dallas, Tex is, Oct. 27.?The Rev. (5. 10. Morrison was hanged at 12 o'clock to day at Vernon, Texas, lor wile murder, lie met 1 his death resignedly. On the scaffold lie said to the select parlv | ot twenty witnesses permitted at j the execution : "1 am innocent, Circumstances, over which I have no control, have placed me in this position. I have taken my trouble in private to mv God. I admit that I have acted indiscreetly. I have done no worse, however, than hundreds of men who stand high in the religious, social, business and official circles of your State. I have nothing to confess. I am in the hands of my Maker. lie knows I am innocent." Morrison's neck was broken and his death appeared to be pain less. The crime for which the Rev. G. E. Morrison paid the death penalty was the poisoning of his wife in October. 1S97. The mo tive for the crime was to rid himself of a pretty, amiable, loving wife in order to marry a lady possessed of means, one hundred thousand dollars of which was in cash. Morrison married I is deceased ! wife about 17 years o. At one ) time they lived in Cu.i.ornia, then ( in Oklahoma Territory, from which place they moved to I'an j Handle, Texas, where the crime was committed. lie was born; and raised in Illinois, and went ! to school at Oarbondale. He procured strychnine for the ostensible purpose of poisoning animals which, he said, were catching his chickens. On the day previous he had procured a box of quinine with empty capsules On Friday night before her deat Mrs. Morrison went to the Swiss Bell Kingers, leaving Morrison at home, who said he had to prepare his Sunday sermon. I'he next morning he took the strychnine back to the druggist, telling him that ho was afraid to use it for fear he would poison bis neighbors' chickens. The package had been onensd. On his return from Topeka hf was arrested, held a few days was released on bond and tied About three months thereafter lit was arrested in San Franeisco, re turned to iexts, tried, witn JVlisi Whittlesey as the main prosecu ting witness, and given the deatl penalty.
