Greenwood, Aug. 17.?The af termath of the wheat growers convention is perhaps an interest ing as the sessions themselve and the deep, widespread interes now felt in the subject of whea growing is excuse enough for inon on the same line. It is the purpose of I hose ii charge to have a more profitable meeting here next year. In tin next 12 months many farmer will experiment with this graii and in that time it can be ascer talned just who can give the bes advice based upon practical am successful experience. The com rnittee to prepare a programme will have ample opportunity t< do their wojk and an instructive symposium be the result. It is reasonably certain that the acreage of wheat in South Caro lina next year will be much lar ger than eser before. The agita tion for this means of a diversifi cation of crops is to bear results but all true reforms must be grael ual to be lasting in their effects and each year will see an im provement, as success proves the advisability of extending the var iety of crops. Heretofore there has been no market for whea grown in South Carolina, while we have furnished a fine, a mos profitable, market or rathe dumping ground for adulterated western flour. If a South Caroli na citizen who has been buyinf his flour from the west were tc ?ro to one of those bier concern which make flour in the west, h< would be denied the privilege o seeing the process employed. Tin adulteration is kept secret, so fai as possible. At present, so far as I car learn, there are about 35 rolle: mills in South Carolina, and ] take it that anybody can examim their operation at any convenien lime. These mills, are owned am controlled by ci izons of rhis State They are in the business for th< money to be had out of it, but yei their interests are identical wit! those of their fellow citizens, the farmers, to whom they oiler a con venient and profitable market. It is claimed that the rollei mills take out more "toll" thai the old fashioned concerns. Then is an admitted difference in flic percentage retained, but there i? a satisfactory explanation. The burr mills take .out about one eighth; the roller mills one.sixth But the burr mills calculate the per eent. on the amount of wheat after it has been cleaned while the roller mills base their toll 01 the total amount of wheat as it i; brought to the mill. In the eiu there is little or no difference. A farmer stated that he had tested the matter by experiment am found that he got one pound les: from the roller mill, but lie wai entirely satisfied since it was bet ter Hour than the other. Out of one bushel of wheat about 41 or 42 pounds of > flour are made. The ruling price of wheat at the roller mills is now s about 80 cents per bushel, but j the most of the wheat obtained j on the local markets is by fx B change on the terms just slated. It is estimated that the aver- age capacity of the roller mills in g this State is about 45 barrels of p flour per day. The largest mill is ^ one of those at Greenville, the j capacity of which is 150 barrels * per clay. There are several with 1 ^ capacities of 75 barrels, and from f j that they grade on down. A mill e of G5 barrels capacity will use ^ hardly less than .'125 bushels of ^ ^ wheat a day. One miller told me that from June to September ho is able to i: , run his milljentirely with home s raised wheat. From September n to January, about 75 per cent of his uraw material" is abtained on the local market, the other por 11 tion being bought in Tennessee t and further west. Then from 'I January to June all of the wheat r| ' has to be brought fr *m the west. So it will be seen that during six months in the year, the South a Carolina mills send money out ^ ^ west to buy a product which can v a .just as easily be raised at the j mill rl r\r\ on/1 ??oiao<1 f ?* ^ ? i ****** uwia auu laiocu niui u a L <i _ I profit. 1 Josh Ashley says he "ain't agin , . the roller mills, tho they does r take a leetle too much toll. What 8 j I wants is more of'em so's there'll v 3 be competition, boys." And Josh p 3 is rig it. The farmers will profit a f by a multiplication of roller mills ^ 3 and this is coming. Then the farr mers will raise mot j wheat. * ; The roller mills now have no n 3 trouble in placing their product t; r on the market. Nearly all of them t< [ make two or three grades of 3 white llour besides tho nutritious I Graham llour and some of them e \ grind corn also. It is only natu- c ral that this home made llour c j should be popular. There is no fi I doubt about the adulteration of ? ! the western Hour while the home ' 5 product is pure. It seems that there is a great c future for the Hour industry in r this State in connection with the a , more extended sowing of wheat. ? The majority of the roller mills at present are in what has become x . the manufacturing section of r I , South Carolina, the upper por. tion, where the cotton mills and J oil mills are also clustered, but .1 > they hre good things to have scat- r I tered around generally. , In the not too distant future, ,! we may hope for a big commer Jcial roller mill in the capital and 1 business bentre of the State, Co ' t ! luinbia. l I>eWitt's Tattle Karly Risers dill me t M more good than all blood medicines i f 3 j and other pills," writes Ceo. The aarket rallied partially later, on ins..;isfoctory weather conditions a the cotton belt, it being feared hat insufficient rain had fallen, 'he fact that tho weather in 'exas continues very hot as well s in other parts of the southwest, dded to the apprehension of the tear contingent in connection vith the tact that no rains are ndicated by the government foreasts.
