The lire, it is claimed bv those who lirst reached the depot, originated in a lot of cotton on the platform. In a remarkably short time the lire spread from one end of the building to the other, and in about three-quarters of an hour there was nothing to be seen except smouldering ruins. The aggregate loss on the depot, platform and contents will amount to about * 1 1,000 or $13,000, partially covered by insurance. Those who sustained losses were Mr. Win. tiaoHon, about $800; .J. F. Mackey it do., about $*>5; J. J. Blackmon. about $30: Funderhurk Co about anil Heath, Springs & < o. about $."?,()()<), including cotton and merchandise. Mr. J. W. drowning, a clothing drummer, lost five trunks of clothing,valued at $ 1 and Mr. X. V. Bntton one trunk of hats, valued at $.">00. Mr. .1. K. lMackmon lost all of his and his family's wearing apparel, he having put his trunks in the depot I uesday, intending to leave on the early train next morning, provided the comptroller general came up in time to make the annual settlement. The amount of his lo?s is estimated at $110. The warehouse of Messrs. Knight vt: MacKorell was also burned together with most of its contents, consisting of moat. meal, ll.mr etc. Their loss was about $1,200, partially insured. Also a freight car and a Hat car on the sidetrack of the S. C. A It. railroad was burned,( The origin of the fire in not known.
