The following editorial from the Newberry Herald and News on the subject of roller mills is very timely in as much as Lancaster intends to have one: "We are glad to see so many iuiicr nuns ^mug up ill UllierOTH parts of the State, and also that we are to have several in this county. That, is what we should have done several years ago. It will encourage our farmers to grow their own bread at home. The growing of wheat, had almost been discontinued altogether in this State, whereas a few years ago there was a great deal of it made. Anything that will tend to make our farmers grow on the farm all they need for their farm is a good thing for this country. We never did believe it was cheaper for the farmer to buy his flour than it was to make it, we care not what the price of cotton is or the price of flour. There are things we cannot grow to a profit in this section, but they are very few and scarcely any of them absolutely necessary. This is a great land?this Southland?but our people have never 11 r\ 4 /* U/* 11 ?- ?1- 4 tt nrvcu u iu iild 1(111 rt>2ftll%&llOD of their vast natural advantages." <:But we are oflT the subject slightly. Yes, we are glad to Ree these roller mills going up. We hope there will he one in every section." Claims Approved. A telegram has been received from Judge C. I*. Townsend at Washington stating that all remaining claims on account of the mustering of troops has been np proved and that a check would be sent to the governor at once. About $000 of these claims have l>oen paid, but they amount in all to $10,000. The matter of pay for rejected "volunteers is still unsettled, but data is being gotten and the mat ter will he pressed with vigor be fore the war department.?Co) umbia Record. Elvin Kelly, a venerable and and intelligent looking negro with side whiskers, and a dearth of hair on the top of a well shaped head, was convicted of breaking into the Dry Crock, Lancaster county, post office. A few statnp1 ed envelopes was the sum total of the loot he obtained. The sentence of the court was two years in the Kaleigh penitentiary. In receiving sentence Kelly swallowed at his Adam's apple and bit his lip as if the sentence w*s a disappointment to him. At a meeting of the railroad commission held in Columtitu Wednesday, second vice PrMldent, W. W. Flrdey, of the Southern, in speaking of the proposed reduction in freight rates on cotton, mi id: As to the cotton r.nos as ho understood it the conditions are noon likely to be materially chanced. There are now two strong companies getting out the round bales. If this round bale business develops it Is likely to be tnore on the order of local bnsincss. We will pet this cotton largely from local points.
