Case Testing Dispensary Law Other Than Ours. .... 1 he hrbt dispensary case arising in any other State than South Carolina is to be heard bet ore Jadgc Sinionton of the United States court in this city to-day. It will be quite a novelty for a North Carolina original package case to be argued iu the capital of the dispensary State. At the last session of tho general assembly in North Carolina an net was passed permitting the towns aud cities to establish dispensary systems therein if they saw lit. The town of Monroe established a dispensary. The law wos piit in etteet on .Jan. 1 and the dispensary was opened. Two days later an <). 1'. agency was opened in Monroe by the agent of a mun named White, who ship pee the stock from Agusta, <;a. The agent was promptly arrested and his goods seized. Mr. White has instituted habeas corpus proceedings before .Judge Simonton in have his agent released and the stock restored. The agent is here in the custody of the North Caro lina Hherill". Mr. White and his at torneys are also here. They are y to have a hearing befer Judge tSimonton at 1 o'clock to-day. The outcome of this "foreign" (). P. case is being looked for with an unusual degree of intert i .-t by those who are famaliar ,, v. ith tile legal lights over the dis 1 pensary law of this State. (JEN. General John Bratton died at his home at Winnsboro at 1) :M0 o'clock to-night, from a severe attack of heart trouble. The funeral took place at Winnsboro last Friday at 10 o'clock in the forenoon.?Register. i. Can the Fat Conlents in 3iilk he Increased hy Food.' J .i v V ooilwiiiM, ii. I'ractit'iil Farm* . ; Tliere seems to lie a wide gulf of disagreement between dairyI men and the scientific investi-i ~ gator? to whether it is possible! !to increase the quantity of milk ; by any system of feeding. It is almost universally believed among milkmen that the charae-: t- 1 of the foi.d docs effect tl?ej quantity of the butt r fat in the! milk. They know thai when word | comes from their milk consignee t . . . ,in the city: ".Miiiv poor; not up to standard ; what's the matter tliat 1 ?y a change of food in tho * right direction. they can in a lit| tin while bring tlie* milk up to the requisite qual'.ity. The scientific men, on the otiier hand, deny al! such possibility beyond the 'Tcr-i i nial limit" of the cow. Tin: i.iorej 1 study tlii.- matter, and theclosei i observe the cows and the way * they respond to feed, the more I am convinced that the dairyne n are rig! t. ! know that when 1 put in a Jut of poor cows from the dairy counties of .New W>rk am! f'etd t!iem high, that gradually it take - le a.id le?s tnilk to make a pound of butter. /M! agree, ' so.entitle men h<- well a-< dairymen, that f a cov.- bo starved 01 11 , ii properly fed tint the : re rit ^ b of l'..l i be very m .te.ially decreased, and of course if follows that, if a cow that has been so treated be again properly and bountifully led. the per cent, of, butter fat will be increased *, certainly up to the same degree of richness as before the starving, began. Hut here the scientific man gets behind that very convenient term, ''normal limit,"and if the cow be made to give ever so much richer milk he says," Oh, she has not reached her normal limit." So this is with him a shifting point, beyond which, no matter how well tho cow bo made to do, she can never be forced. Now, 1 am in full accord with the dairymen. I don't believe any such thing as "normal limit" to the cow. Of course, I don't claim it possible to so feed u cow which gives 3 per cent, milk, when well fpt) uu to b ' - A- 1 MiauKc ner lino u 4 per cent. cow. Such a change would bo simply abnormal and excessive, but 1 am firm in the belief that any good cow can, by constantly being fed on a properly prepared ration, up to her ability to digest and assimilate, be made to give milk wiiich will bo steadily gainign in fat contents. The trouble with those denying such a possibility is that they think that to prove the claim the J cow should in a siiort time be; made to show this excessive gain,! when the fact is that a gain of | one-hundredth part of one per J cent, or even one-tenth of this in a single generation would be a wonderful advance, and if by so| lection of progeny and a contin I uance of feeding on this line, each j generation should ho made to j muko the same advance, we1 should soon have cows f.ir exceeding any that have yet been I produced. Even bucIi verv hitrhl authority as l'rof. Vorhees,in his J admirable work,"First Principles in Agriculture,"in writing on this i subject, page 187,says : "Its inllu-i ence(the food) is felt, not only in i the quality of nulk produced, but, on tho quality of the product." i Now this must be true, else how . is it that cows have varied so > much from the original type and breeds vary so much from each other? If we select, for instance, j the .Jersey, the model butter cow, and the llolstein, the model milk producer, and study the character of food each has eaten for goner ations almost without number, we must concede that each i* but the natural result produced by the food eaten, advantages being taken in selecting stock animals as had responded most markedly to the inllucnco of the food. It it not worth the while ol our Kxpe riment Stations to make exporim !i' to fully ti .t tki.; matter? They say two cows of same brood,] a* near as like ;i" possible, large milkers ol milk of mouciate (ju alitor, and feed one as she has been usually fed, and the otlier on a ration best adapted to produce butter fat, and continue this for several years, and make a test at least once a we etc and compare the result. < >f course U the cow fed for increase of fat contents shall show a gradual increase of ovt me prcci-iiirij?: one, ami the other cow tine* riot, ii will be pret ty conclusive proof that the dairymen are right, and thi- even if .-audi gain i-lia.ll tu t be over onoliuiuireth of one per cent. l>y all J means let ud have this test not by on" Station alone but by several of them.
