C. !'.' ! 1 I " ot Water and Milestone Solutions as Remedies for Smut in Wheat. The following extract from ulletin Mo. 09 of the Kentucky gricultural Experiment Station ill bo read with interest by owers of wheat. By II. (Jarman, Entomologist id Botanist: It should be more generally uown that bluostone, when used i very strong solutions, destroys ie vitality of a portion of the teds soaked in it. This etl'eet ol le solutions is not apparent ex?pt by cci iparison with untrci 1 seed, and bonce the diminish1 yield is not liuely to bo roc mixed on tiie farm as tin? result treatment. While this loss lonbl lie avoided it possible, it more than oll'set tiy the increase yield due to the preventation ' smut, and hence, in spite of its feet. Milestone is recommended crywhere as an effective means saving wheat from smut. The common practice is to ak. up a solution by dissolving x pounds of Milestone in four illons of hot water, then pouris into a barrel and adding lough water to make *20 gallons, ic seed wheat is dipped in this loose bags, care being taken at every seed is wetted, then e surplus solution is drained it by resting the bag for a brief me on sticks placed across the p of the barrel, and finally the heat is poured out on a lloor id dusted with air-slacked lime. If the wheat is to be sprinkled is poured in a heap on a barn )or and the solution is applied itli a watering can, the wheat dug raked about at the same tne until all is wetted, when it dusted with lime as before and tread out to dry. Carol til comparative tests of uestone solutions and of hot wa r as preventives of smut show at hot water is quite as efctive in checking the disease id has the advantage of not .juring the sound seed. When eating secd with hot water it is ell to lie provided with the fol wing: A good Fahrenheit thereunder. A large kettle in which liter can he heated. Throe har Is. With a ?o*l supply of hot water at hand it is very easy to regulate the temperature in the barrel, much easier than would be supposed by one who has not tried | it. At the end of fifteen minlutesthe wheat is removed from the water and spread out to dry. ! Iiut it must never be spread out | on a lloor upon which smutted : wheat has lain. The eonvenj ience, cleanliness and cheapness of this method of preventing smut will certainly commend it to farmers, and I have no doubt but that it will displace the use . of Milestone in course of time. I>0?A spe- j cial to tin' Constitution from 11a-1 vana, via Key West says : From a strictly private and yet , responsible source, comes the in I formation that the port of Havana j will be opened to exj ortation within 2-1 hours.
