In every rural district of every state and all along the border pohibition officers ate in the field. They are centering every activity on the suppression of illicit distilling and smuggling. Co-operating with the prohibition agents are old and experienced reve nue agents and customs officers. In addition, special agents in Mexico, Canada and islands off the Florida coast, have established a liason with the officers in the United States and e keeping them advised of all liquors leaving foreign territory for 1 the states. Early reports to the pohibition commissioner indicate the success of the drive. From the mountain fast nesses of the south, long celebrated for the manufacture of “moonshine,” agents report the destruction of hun dreds of stills, and wholesale arrests. Sections of the country which have long been the principal source of sup ply have been penetrated for the first time. Sheriff’s posses /and state agents are co-operating with the dry agents. In Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Geor gia more than a thousand army of ficers are scouring the country. Every road of entry along the Ca nadian border is under close surveil lance of federal officers. Reports from operatives revealed a plot to smuggle a huge shipment across the lakes from an isolated Canadian point. The shipment of many thou sand gallons was stopped before it could get under way. It will be kept in sight until turned back, or con fiscated on the American side. Usually there’s just one reason for that grimy streak—a grimy coat collar. Ever stop to think of all the dirt and dust and grit and cinders and smoke your clothes collect every day? For your health’s sake, and for neat ness, too, it’s just as important that coats and trousers be cleaned frequently as it is to have your personal linen launder ed regularly. And it’s a good thing for one’s pocket- book in the long run—for it’s the grit and grime and the loss of shape that kill clothes—not the wear. We can call for that coat or suit tomor- Cop in B. V. D.’s Chases Burglar New York.—A crowded courtroom tittered cruelly in the Coney Island Court as Detective Lau of Inspector Sackett’s staff preferred a charge of vagrancy against Ernest Moore of 2271 West First street, Gravesend. Lau lives at 270 Avenue W, Sheeps- head Bay. Under him, in a two- family house, lives his landlord, Thomas Cearra. About 3 o’clock yes terday morning Lau was aroused fom his slumbers by a rapping on the ceiling and his landlord yelling “Burglars”! Lau answered the call to duty, clad only in his revolver and B. V. D.’s. He dashed into the yard in time to see a form disappearing up the street. He yelled, and the form only put on more speed, while neigh bors’ windows went up. Then he fired a couple of shots in the air, gaining thereby greater publicity and more speed on the part of the fugi tive. The detective started to give chase, while some one was telephon ing the Sheepshead Bay station that a crazy ghost was shooting up the street. In the meantime, being deeply shocked at the undressed condition of the majesty of the law, Cearra gathered up a pair of trousers and shoes belonging to Lau and started to deliver them, albeit he himself was no more substantially clothed than his tenant. For three blocks Lau in his B. V. D.’s pursued Moore, and was in turn pursued by the scantily clad Cearra, waving Lau’s trousers and shoes. Lau admitted to Magistrate Liota in court that he was about to quit from sore feet when Moore gave up. Why Not A Farm Trust? A comparatively few men, if thev desired, could fix the price of steel by a simple, single order, and if there should be over-production could limit the rate of output or entirely close down, in order that the supply might not overwhelm the selling agencies and disastrously demoralize the mar ket. Knowing how impossible that is with farming, nothing like that is dreamed of by the farmers; but they do hope that they may find some way to modernize, as other great indus- tries have done, and introduce some measure of orderly and economical marketing into the credit to carry If a man finds an auto tire in the their products for their own and the road, he doesn’t go home and hang it general benefit. over his front door. The farmers cannot practically suc ceed in limiting production for price controlling purposes even if they should deliberately unite to do so.
