Rain interfered very much with the pleasure of the veterans, but all managed to get a good deal of en joyment out of their trip to Louis ville, and while there were the recipi ents of much attention. The reunion of 1901 will be held in Memphis, Ten nessee. -The Rock Hill correspondent of the News and Courier has the follow ing tc say of the visit of the Winthrop girls ,o Winnsboro: "Professor Brea zeale, with five members of the grad uating class, went to Winnsboro Saturday so as to be ready to make observations Monday. They were entertained by the citizens of the town and came back with glowing accounts of both the eclipse and the open hearteduess of the Winnsboro people." J. Q. Wofford com mencement begins on June 9th, con tinning until June 12th. Mr. E. H. Hall, from Fairfield, is a member of the graduating class, and is vice-presi dent of the class. Eighteen young men will graduate from Wofford Col lege this year. The exercises at the College for Women begin on Thurs day, June 7th. Rev. John T. Chal mers will preach the baccalaureate sermon on next Sanday. -Mr. J. Frank Fooshe publishes the following little fact in his Teach ers' Journal, and it speaks well for both the pupils and teachers of the school, that the school property is kept in such good condition. Mr. Fooshe says: "Accidents around school buildings are not altogether unknown. Especially is this true of window panes. But Principal W. H. Witberow, of Winnsboro, has it to his credit of having had only two such accidents at Mount Zion daring his principalship of fourteen years. Since the fire on the morning of the 28th of May the town and surrounding community have been very much ex cited in numerous expeditions for the arrest of Tom Hill. Friday evening it was reported that Tom was on the eastern side of Winnsboro and had broken into one for two houses of colored people, and stolen provisions. One old colored man stated that he had taken a skillet from his house. A party of searchers set out immediately, and pursued a cold trail far into the night. The most tangible evidence found that Tom had really been in the neighborhood was the finding of the skillet. This expedition ended in a failure., Saturday morning a colored man named Emanuel Small came into town and narrated that he knew Tom Hill well having gone to school with him, and that on that morning while he was working in a field about four miles north of (Winnsboro, Tom came into the field and without any cere mony began 1. fire upon him. Eman uel came to Winnsboro with a gun that from appearances might have bee:i used in the American Revola tion, but he immediately purchased a new ..ie. He is a colored man of good r-putation, and his manner in. spire I confidence in his story which was strengthened by his quick pur chase of a new gun. Another expe dition was organized forthwith, and set out to the scene of Tom's supposed appearance. Messages had been sent to the State penitentiary for blood Lounds, and the dogs came up on a freight about 10 o'clock Saturday morning. When the party of pur suers got a short distance out of town they were informed that Tom had been seen still further north of the place where the Smsll man hid seen him, and that he bad eaten his break fast at this point. The dogs, there fore, jwere taken to this point. The crumbs of bread were found, but the dogs failed to strike a trail, whether because the appearance of Tom was a myth or because the trail was too cold is not known. This expedition came to naught. Sunday night Job Crosby came to town with a sensational story that he run upon Tom Mill near White Oak and fired at him three or four times. A number of men rose from their beds and again went out on a chase. The dogs were taken to the place where Bob said that he had seen him. Again the dogs refused to follow a trail. This expedition returned Men day morning about 8 30, and like its predecessors was a fruitless under taking. Many people are beginning to doubt whether Tom Hill is a human being or a myth.
