I would like to know what has become of our ,ounty commissioner? Is be dead or as he gene to Washington to see De e% ? Our roads in some places tre not passable. At Bucklick post 3ce a wagon turned over on an old olored woman and came near killing ier; if it had been some of the white iace they would have sued the county >r a great sam. If Mr. Tennant does not see after such places and at mad to his business what need do the ounty want for such an office? Just o pay him a salary to sit up in his rood health? Why, that is an impo ition on the county. This road has een in a bad condition for some time, nd the people have been trespassing n Mr. Jones' land, but there has been orn planted in the field and a fence ilt, so it is the county road now or lone. Men say so many things they vould do if they only had the office ike Absalom of old, but when they ;et into it they soon forget. This oad has been reported to the grand ury, so I am told, and they too have reated it with silence. What do eople pay taxes for and can not get a 'oad? Get good men and then we ill have good roads, and let these bsaloms alone. Pansy. Bucklick, Apiii 16, 1900. I :. oeir -11* ~at he is at home, in his family, aong his neighbors, and having known "Unc'e Joe" so long and.well, I must testify to his worth: as a citi zen, a neighbor, and friend. Never ave I known him to speak an unkind word about anyone, and as to an un kind act his very nature was above it; and that kindness in him was re warded, for.never have I known him spoken of unkindly by any one, an~ havig .visited him in his sickness, it was pleasant to note the kindness and tenderness shown him by his three daughters and their children, whc were untiring in their attention. One remarked to me once, "We were al ways taught obedience, and neve knew what it was to disobey father.' What a reward for children, and wha a lesson to the young. McMast ECLIPSES OF THE SUN The Coning Total Ecllps%Will Bt a Very Rare Spectacle Dr. Jas. H. Carlisle in Carolina Spar tan. Readers of the Spartan are glad to see responses to the editor's call for reports from those who have seen a total eclipse of the sun. Maay live to old age, who have not seen one. The great city of London once went five hundred years without having the moon's shadow to pass directly oTSr it. There are many old persons in our State who have never seen one. In 1834, (November 30,) the moon's shadow passed over the edge of our coast, giving Beanfort and Charleston a total eclipse. It seems probable that your correspondent, Mr. Coggins, is not entirely accurate in his recollec tion. There was an eclipse of the sun in 1S44, (December 9,) that was visi ble over nearly all of the Unit2d States. But it was not a total eclipse anywhere, about one-fourth of the sun's faee being visible. In 1869, (August 9,) there was an eclipse that was total in a narrow belt of country frotm Oregon stretching in a south eastern direction througti North Caro lina, but, except perhaps for an instant on the extreme upper edge of our county, it was not total. Here in this city a small crescent of the sun was not hidden, though the chickel:r seemed to conclude that night had come and so went to their roosts but came out. In 1865, (October 8,) there was a cel,'ral eclipse of the san, the moon con.'g directly between as and the sun. But it was not large enough to hide all the sun. A narrow ring or it ci of the sun was seen. This was wht is called an annular eclipse. NUMBEIt OF ECLIPSES. A year may pass without an eclipse of the moon, but -there must he two eclipses of the sun every year. This does not meau that every person sees two eclipses every year. But the moon's shadow must fall twice every year on some parts of the earth, mak ing two eclipses of the sun, six months apart as was the case in the years '93 and '97. More fregaently there are four eclipses in the year, one of the sun and one of the moon two weeks apart, and six months later another pair of similar eclipses as in '97. If an eclipse happens very early in January and one very late in Decem ber, there may be seven in one year, as was the ease in 1825. This is the greatest possible number and happens very rarely. In any number of years there are moic eclipses of the sun than of the moon. Yet any person sees more lunar than solar eclipses. Every clipse [of the moon must be seen by more than halt of the earth while a solar eclipse covers only a very small part of the earth's surface. An eclipse > the moon is causcd by the shadow >f the earth ibli'g on the moon, and ll who see the 'moon must see it with this shadow on its face. An eclipse >f the san is caused by the moon (a small body near us) coming between s and the sun, a very distant body. rhe moon may -hide the sun from one ~ountry, while a neighboring country as no shadow of the moon on it. Just as a small cloud may thr.?w its badow over one field, while a geid aear by is in the bright sunshine. To+ e hsesof the sun occur about o ne in tw lsepart of the United States (includ ing the coming one), during this cee tury A county in North Carohin that saw the total eclipse of '69 wil see that of 1900. This is a very rar privilege.
