THE people are running this busi ness of ovations and gatherings into the ground. While McKinley waves the flag tumultuously and rather hysteri cally over every doubtful State, poor Dewey is made to travel around the country like Wal'ace's citeus or a first class min-trel troupe. This is not in very good taste; but it becomes shock ing taste when the object is to draw a crowd and rake in the dollars. We believe that the main object of every ovation, from that at New York to that at Atlanta, is simply to put money into the treasury of the imerchants, car lines, hotels and saloons. It is even proposed to make the National Educational Association a money making scheme for Charleston and for the association. Instead of stating out right whether they will come the com mittee write that there must be evi deuce of interest on the part of South ern teachers, and therefore Charleston must show a great list of members at two dollars a head to assure interest. It ia said that California pledged five thousand State teachers at two dollari apiece when the %ssociation went ther last year. The committee are on th( make, not for themselves probably but for the treasury. They get excur nions from different States, and if wi mistagte not offer a bonus to som, teacher to work them up. Befor, long enterprising promoters will b putting up conferences and synods t, the highest bidder for cash. THE Brooklyn baseball team ha won the championehip this season.
