They expect the plants in ten or f!feen days. .-Superintendent Shipp and family have moved into the house recently built for the superintendent by the Fairield Cotton Mills. The new house is a comfort:Lble two story building and is -onveniently near to the cotton mill. -In Tuesday's session of the House Mr. F. H. Weston introduced reso lations welcoming the United Con federate Veterans to Charleston and to South Carolina. The resolutions were unanimously adopte 1. The veteraos. may feel sure of a warm wel come and they wil! be the recipients of the hospitality for which Charles tov is so famous. -The bad weather that we have had recently interfered to some extent with the work on the new depot but in spite of theze interr-iptions the work is gettin- ou nicely and judging by the progress that is made from day to day it wi*l bt be long before the building vill b ready f.r ocenpancy. It promises to be a very neat, pretty building and wi:1 be very convenient in ev"ry respec,. -Thursdlay was Candlemas Day, so called because in the ioman Catho lic Church an -ffZrng or cand'es is made to the charch and the e candles, which must be nide of wax, are blessed aud aistributed among the Congregation These blessed candles are used in tirm-es of danger and are greatly prized by the Roman Catho lies. ,tccordi:fg to the old saying, as Candlemas wms dar'% and rainy we will have an early spring. -On Thursday after'noon Mrs J. F. McMaiter gave a delightful afternoon reception in honor of Mrs. Chas. Stevenson. The gunests were invited from half-past four to six o'cloc , au'd although the weather was un'avorable -a number o ladies were present. Ddlicions refresh ments were serve d in the daintiest s:yie and the followin'g young ladies assisted in serving the ~ guests: Misses Jessie Jennings, Agnes Rice, Frances Greight- and Charlette Aliston. The tvo hours passed most pleasantly and all had a charming time. - The Sumter WatchmaLn and South ron says that small pox is gradually spreading over samter county in spite of efforts to stamp it out. The epidemic has been prevailing for nearly two months and there now seems to be danger of it spreading to the adjoining contiea. A iegro who says his name is Bill Hawkins was arrested here on Wed nesday afternoon with a horse and snrrey in his possession. Sheriff Elli son hearing that the negro was trihig to sell the horse and surrey for fifty dollars, at once suspected that some thing was w:ong and proceeded to in vestigate. The negro claimed to be from Augiista, b'tit when qnestioned about the city knew. nothing about it, so the sheriff had him arrested. It was discovered that the negro had-stolen the horse and surrey from T. H. Pick ney in Columbia. The man was taken to Columbia on Thursday night. CHURCH SERVICES. The southbound freight train was wrecked on Monday night near Blythe wood. The engine and three box cars were thrown ofi'of the track and about 250 yards of the track was .tern up, the amount of damage being about four hundred dollars. The'accident was caused by a negro who deliberate ly pened the switch in order that the train might be wrecked. Two negroes, Paul Sharp and Elliott Jeffries, were arrested oa the charge of malicious mischief and attempt to injure rail road property. Paul Sharp was re leased but Jeffries was brought to Winsboro and put in jail to await trial at the next term of court. The accident to the freight train delayed te night passenger train and t he northbound train Tuesday mornirag was delayed several hours. No one was injured in the wreck. GENTLEMWEN OF THE JURY.. The guests began to arri-at 7.30 o'clo& and at 8.30 tiey were all there. After a few moments-of pleas ant chat the' big ball was cleared and the irst game'commenced. They were our same old- games that are always new:. The first was "Steal Partners." 'Thev were at first rather slow in get ting to their places, because all seemed too well satisfied wi:h their partners in conversation to join in a game like this. In fact, there were some who were so satisfied they would not. The music was furnished by Mrs. Pickett on the organ and Mr. George Moore on the harmonica. It was most excel lent, rnd of all the evening's players we thougbt them best. Our mandolin ano guitar players did not bring their listruments and we contented our selves with the organ and harmonica. The fi:st game started, the whole series were gone through; each succeeding one being carried out with the greatest amusement, especially the one called "Goihg to Jerusalem," in which the girl. please the boys to the utmost. Tetn came the game "Cl-p," and all w Lirled to their heart's content. Some likr:1 this game better than "Steal Par: e:r;." as they never did like any of little stealing games that are )fte. practiced, besides there were a fex .o wouldn't play it becaEs it wa. too much like dancing, and that out of their sphere. Promptly at 10.30 o'clock all were invited to refreshments in the shape of .a regular supper. It was something of a cold night and the steaming hot cof fee was most acceptable. especially to far-comers. .A wild turkey furnished part of the repast, and those not used to this kind of meat recognized the especially sweet ffavor. The turkey was killed by Mr. Ira Scott, the re nowned turkey hunter of our section, After the supper the guests returned to the hil to listen to a song by that most c!ar ning young lady, Miss Hallie McCormick, of Longtown. The rest of the games were then played and some were repeated. All the while Mr. Pickett and Mr. Scott, looking en froim a corner, took -turns Fin joking two certain young ladies who it ap poari are aftcr the same young man. It was one o'clock when the party brohe up, all having enjoyed them selves to the ntmost; the enj)yment beinsE due, we feel sure, to Mrs. Pickett's good management and per sona lity. Without naming the guests, I wiii only say they came from the coutlry in general-from Oakland, Flir' Hill, one from Edgemeor, lack lick, Longtown and Ridgeway.
