THE NEWS AND 1IERALI PUBL fHED TR- WEEKLY -BY f8 AND HERALD COMPANI rE~la. IN( ADVANCE: )e Tear, - - - 63.0 S1X 'oaths. 2- . - 1.5 WINNSBORO, S. C. Saturday, October 15, - 189s TEZ Naval B)ard, which is tryinc t make a !eport as to the positions o the different warships daring the naval battle at Santiago, seeks to show that the "battle was fought and won upon plans prepared by Rear Admiral Sampson," and as the News and Courier adds, "that Admira] Schley had very little to do with the fight." We agree fully with the News and Courier that such a findinig wil not be "accepted as at all satisfactory by the majority of intelligent people in this country." ampon's friends should drop at once any effert to minimize Schley's part in this battle. 'Sampson made a great blander when he sent that dis. pa'ch about what '-the fleet under my command" had accomplished, and now if the Naval Board shall even seem to take credit from Schley for Sampson's benefit, maby intelligent people of the country will suspect, and not without reason, that there is a systematic effort on' officialdom to give unde served credit to Sampson, and confi dence will not be placed in the report of the Naval Board. Official reports such as theirs should command the confidence of the country. The News and Courier speaks the right kind of sentimentin saying: "We can very well understand that officers of the fleet are jealous of their own reputa. tion, and it is an honorable thing that they should desire to have full credit for whatever work was done under their immediate direction, but, how ever honorable the ambition, we do not think that it is exactly the thing to attempt at this late day to detract t from the splendid services of Admiral &hley. In the official reports of the battle we do not think it can be shown j that he neglected to speak in proper i terms of the services of the ships en- t gaged with him in the battle. The I temper of the findings of the Board as y summarized in the telegraphic die- s patches is not attractive." The second clause of the findings isa certainly not attractive. It is: "The a directing of the movements of ships it done by Schley during the battle was inconsiderable." Suppose '"the di recting [of the moverr~ents of ships" g was "inconsiderable"? "The direct- F ing" was enough to destroy the Span- C *ish fleet without Schley's losing a til single ship. P1 pe THE FIRST REGIMENT ROW. b The Mixed Conditin of Mafa--r an or Anti-Tmman, Which. t Geeille Mouflntaineer. t] Lient. Wade H. Ligon, of Company tot HI, First South Carolina Regiment, du .has be~n at home for screral days. It gis was Lient. Ligon who preferred the the charge upon which the court martial Th of Lient. Col. Tillmian has been or- tioj -dered, and lie gives a damaging ac- wa count of the whipping of the negro atti boys. He states that h: did not favor Cns bringing the matter before a masgis- coni trate and this was done by Lient. Dun- gre lap. Lient. Ligon went to wo:k at Col once to formulate the charges for a court martial of Col. Tillman and he had the charges in shape before the by magistrate gave his decision. Person- rest ally he has no ill-will towards Col. The Tiliman, but it was his conviction that ness a court martial was advisab~le, and in rem~ this he was supported by other officers -igfl, Within the last two days a move- Iinir ment hasri -started to~iing-iibout a | this withdrawax of the charge -ngainst Col 'uml Tillman. Senator Tillut and Gov. and Ellerbe are said to be woi e , in tha ness direction. Lient. Ligon se..ed 3 ester- lami day just before leaving foir Uolumobia tube that he could not say what he would bea do about the withdrawal, but he is niri .Inclined to think that this would be an catr admission of guilt on the part of other flame officers against whom Col. Tillman has faces threatened to make counter charges. We Lient. Ligon expresses his confidence for at that Col. Tillman can find nothing to catari bring against him and he is therefore Hali' not afraid to let the matter proceed, Jars; but if bis friends among the officers rs request it, the court martial proceed-, $Sold ings may be stopped. Lient. Ligon statedi that his actions would be gov erned by the advice of the officers and* not by the wishes of Senator Tillman I and Gov. Ellerbe. W 'Lient. Ligdan states that all the evi W deuce was not brought out at the mag. -aiy istrate's hearing, and it can be shown tsl that the whipping of the negroes was $ AG most cruel. With the exceptiort of one itce to sergeant, none but commissioned offi- ao cers were put forward as witnesses, Siciness while enlisted men and persona not Price sei connected with the regiment at all, can weakn$ be produ'ced who will swear to the Vitality" brutality of the whipping. streng The talk among the returned soldiers drts about the differences amon~g the .offi- FREE cers is quite lively. Many of the en- Penetswt listed men are very bitter against some uetic Ner of the company commanders, and it is stated by officers that this feeling was largely fostered by Lient Col. TaIwlan .who posed as the private's friend and endeavored to impress upon the men that their company officers were their enemies. I: is said that the only offi. ce in the regiment who stand by Col Tillman are Lients. Grant and Brown, Thoro1 of Company C, from Anderson. 'gorees of Lietnt. J. Walter Gray, Jr., of Comn- Mf. A. pgy F, has established a reputation Esnecial as a man who won't be run over and tion, and this was strengthened by an incident Biology, 1thich happened just after the nmagis- rnages, a: trate's trial. Lieut. Gray went up to Departm< read his testimony befor e signing it rooms ir and an enlisted man, who was known enade t-> I to be a friend of Col. Tiliman, wished the Fo'cut to hear the reading. Lient. Gr ay re- A ddresi plied that it was his business and he would not read it to the soldier, who 7-21 thereupon answered more forcibly tha politely. Lieut. Gray let go an< . knocked the soldier out of the door The soldier reached for a large army pistol which he was carrying, Lu Lieut. Gray got the drop on him an< ordered him off The Greenville officrs are figaring quite prominently In the Tillman affair but the Greenville privites have alsc been heard fro:n. It was Private'Lane of Company H, who started4he peti lion to be mustered out. Th'officers D think Senator Tiliman secured the mustering out of the regiment, as he D telegraphed Private Lane to that effect before .Col. Tillman reached Washing. ton, bat Col. Tillman has been put for ward as Lhe man who did it all and most of the privates look at it- that way. SOMETHING OF A TWO-FOLD INTE REST. Baptist Courer. Recently I was looking over a pile of old papers that had been thrown aside for a number of years. Among them I found a letter, witbout its envelope, written 'o Dr. S. W. Book hart, of Fairfleld, by a young man who is now one of our foreign mis sionaries. The young man was a nephew of cDr. B. The letter is not without historical value, bat its chief interest is in the clear-cut exhibition of a genuine, old-time call to the gos pel ministry, and was, no doubt, the first time he had ever opened his heart to any one on the subject, and was evidently designed for no eye save that of his uncle. How it came in my possession is not now so clear, but as I was on the com mittee of ministers appointed to ex amine the young brother in reference to his call to the ministry, prior to his entering Farman University, I have no doubt but Dr. Bookhart handed or sent It to me to ',e read before the committee of ministers, which was doubtless done. I give the letter of our dear Bro. Entziminger, which is an honor to his bead and heart: At Home, September 23, 1883. Dr. S. W. Bookhart, Blythewood, S. C. Dear Uncle-For several years the ineioation to preach the gospel of Christ Jesus has permeated my mind and heart. Thinking perhaps that I might delude or deceive myself I gave the matter not a passing thought, seeking avocations of a differentj nature. My mind centers on nothing' but the one important command, "Go preach the gospel." I feel that God has called me into his service, and now I am ready to consecrate myself, ' both soul and body, and answer. "Here Lord, am I." Being a matter )f such a delicate nature and one of inch deep moment I have refrained to peak to you before, waiting to horoughly satisfy myself in regard to matter which is either "a savor of [fe unto life or of death unto death." tt ask the prayers of yourself and 's amily, as the,*,feel very near and V ear to me. I desire you to present F he matter before the Association. ( a order to teach Christ I must be tught Christ. Hoping to meet with .h our favor and approbation, I am,w ncerely yours, Idwin Entzminger.'' c P.
