EPTON'S DEFEAT. The defeat of Epton is a lessn to every man who expects to make his living out of politics. We do not know either Mr. Epton or Mr. Der ham, and really had no personal inte rest in the election for comptroller general. Mr. Epton was appointed by Gover nor Ellerbe and Mr. Derham was taken out of the comptrol.er general's office, in which place the latter illed the position of clerk. At the time, it was said that the Governor appointed Epton comptroller general and re moved Derham in order to strengthen himself politically. We ;do not know whether such influences actuated the Governor or not. This motive, how ever, 'was industriously circulated over the State at the time. Conse quently Epton posed as the adminis tration's candidate and he had to bear all the shortcomings of the adminis tration. Derham posed as the victim of a noitical trade; at any rate this was the argument used in the cam paign preceding the election. Mr. Epton is most highly respected in Spartanburg, and, it is said, that he made a most efficient county auditor. His competency to fill the office of Comptroller General was not ques tioned. We believe that it was gene rally admitted that Mr. Derham was fully as competent. Two things in this election we wish to point out. Mr. Derham was at one time a member of the Senate, and it is said that "the feeling of comrade shlp" got him many votes in Lhat body. A short time ago we made the point that a man had to become a member of the legislature if he aspired to an office which the.General Assembly fills. This is a natural influence, and one that can not be well prevented, ex cept by having the people name the officers-all of the officers. The other point we wish to make is the folly of depending on the uncer tainty of politics for your means of support. Mr. Epton had an office Auditor for Spartanburg couty-and -- it is reasonably certain that he' could have held it longer. H ' was offered aan do ess thou ht m ly. He was ,ppoite ,P now without an office. We s e-that a man such as he is rep-B res ied to be will ihave no 'difficulty tb in obtaining employment, but still his o1 defeat illustrates our point. We remember a few years ago, Mr. Win. Edrington, then a very old man, and a man of more_than ordinary ob servation, said in an article to T1nz Nzws AN> HERALD that he had never known a man that got anything out of 21 politics except poverty. It is very sti near the truth. THE General Assembly seems to have a grudge against Go-v. Ellerbe's A appointees. Both Epton and Calvo T have been defeated. We regret Mr. Calvo's defeat. He ought to have 0 been elected in view of his having almost completed the work. There was no complaint that the work was not done satisfactorily by Mr. Calvo, and considering that only his father's misfortune caused the r T-2ney in the office it would have been - hing but good faith to have elected the~ son. IT is fortunate that Senator Mc Laurin was nominated by the people in a primrary election. Judging from the fate of the other appointees of the Governor, Mr. McLaurin would not have been elected by the General As- ~ sembly. A REXARKABLE YOUNG MXAN. Greenwood Index. It will be remembered that some eighit or ten years ago, while the two little boy~s, John and George, of ? rs. Anna Swearengen, who is a sister of the Hon. George D. Tillman and Senator Ben Tiilman, were out hunt ing, one of their guns was accidentally discharged, the discharge striking fall in the face of John and depriving him of the sight of both his eycs. Ha is J.j'f the elder of the two boys. After a few U months of great suffering, duriog A 1 which time everything that science famil and money could do for him, was ageni done, vainly, the boy became hpp up) ai and cheerful, and returned with re- no pr newed avidity to his studies, which he lar pr always loved. After four or fiye Excit years at the Spartanburg Institute for Pre,n the Blind, in which he gained the may I highest honors, even becoming withal KELs a good piano player, he was sent to Phil the South Carolina College, f'rom - - which institution comes now, dated SE~ December 23d, 1897, a report bearing upon its face seven or eight I's each I to I followed by two ema?l stars. This means "highest distinction " A nd more than this, President Wood ward 1 writes upon the report-sent to Mrs.T Swearengen-"This is the highest record in College. Your son is onr finest student, and I congratulate vou on his continued and progressive im-Ld Provement." And yet this bov is blind. A boy from Edgefield rascheQs Ite the highest record ever atuained ir'. the old South Carolina Cole2ge. We ca~ rejoice heartily with his Iridowed Addre mother. ALearn all you can, Learn every day, Not caring a farthing For what others say. Both sides of all questions Read ghen you can, Remember all books Were. written by man. Be kind to your neighbors And all whom you meet, If they di:er with you, Give them the best seat. And if they don't treat you In the same way, They're meaner than you, All people will say. If on your way You meet with a Jew, Remember he has the same right To his opinions as you. If you lived before You camo to this world, You know nothing about it Any more than a squirrel. If we live after we leave here, And don't knew it's us, There is no use at all In raising a fass. After death we go We know not where; If I could stay young I had rather stay here. If that country Is better than this, And we could know, Why, then, be so unwilling to go? We have nothing to guiae us Not even a spark; If you are honest you'll acknowledge It's a leap in the dark. If God has talked to others And never to you, Why should he damn you For not believing it true. The privilege we ask, To others let's give And make this world better Every day th.t we live. If God sends us word By man that will lie, For not beleving Why should we die? y ] -Sam Wallingford. Bladder Troubles.
