It seems that Great Britai add Venezuela have been disputin for a quarter of at century over tU boundry line, andI ,very year or the great European power demanc that the line shall be farther anid farths into Veiezuelan territory. Secretary Olney sums up the situ: tion as follows: ~ 1. The title to territory of indefiniti ~~nfessedly very large extent, C. The disparity in strengrry-. parties is such that Venexuels en hope to establish her claim only throiu peaceful methods. 3. The controversy has exis:ed ft a half a century, despite Venencla ~' efforts to establish a boundry. 4. Venezuela has for a quarter of century striven for arbitration. 5. Great Britain has centinuousi refused, except upon the. ren1unciatio in her favor of a large part of Vene: nela's claims. fr The United States has made 'clear to Great lBritain and the wort by frequent interpositien of gooi offices that the controversy is onie il which its honor and its interests ar involved and the continuance of whici it cannot regard with indifference. President Cleveland makes it per f etly clear that Great Britain's course if she shall succeed in taking alny par of Venrzuela's territory, is in violatioi of the Monroe doctrine. The Ameri can people have always adhered to this p)rinciple, and the Uni:ed States e m. not afford to have to allow G3real Britain to usurp Veneznelan territory. The President has reported the mnatter to Congress. Is mue-sage was applauded. Great &ritain mu,ti arbi trate, or the United States niil, in Jianor, be bound to take a hanul int the controversv. IDGEWAY NATTERS. Social Life--A Petrified Body Stolen. The latest social function which has delighted our young people, was- a 'c>nundrum party" rv.;i last Friday evening as a birthday party to Miss Pearle Rembert by some of her friends in town. The occasion was 'a most enjoyabl one. After struggling with twelve conundrums, to answer which would tax no little the minds of ordi nary people, the guests were invited to partake of refreshments daintily served. The evening's entertainment ended with the delivery of the prices. The first lady's prize, a handsome picture frame, was awarded to Miss Lottie Thomas, while the successful gentleman was Mr. Samuel Thomas, who received as a reward for his ingenuity, a silver tie clasp. Miss Lallie Remhert and Dr. James W. Team are to be congratulated as having been successful in winning the booby pr:ze, a crooked pin. The following were among those present: Mr. and Mrs. W. Herbert Ruff, Mr. and Mrs. J. Spann Edmunds, Mr. and Mrs. J. Blake Boyd, Misiss Pearle and Lallie Rembert, Lottie and Jenuie Thomas, Charlotte Edmunis. Pauline Boyd, Ella Moore and Florence Poozer, Prof. A. E. Strode, Dr. J. W Team, Messrs. J. N. Lemaster, A. T. Moore, Chivis L. Wray, Ilaib .rt Pal mer, Samuel and Charlton Thomas. Anent the discovery near Columbia of the petrified man, which la: of lat( attracted so much attention in thes( parts, we have Leard the following account of a similar instance of petri. facation, whic i would seem t> shac that such things have been knowr before. It we retnembei aright the facts a: detailed to us by a promineut citizei of Longtown, those facts are a! follows: Some time before the las . war, a min from Fairfield moved ti the neighborhood of Montgomery Alabama, where he died, and wa a buried. After some years it was dc I cided to remove his remains to hi s old home in South Carolina. Thi being before the time of entensiv railway conncctions, the removal we made by means of a twc-horse wagor e Upaan the arrival of the corpse 1 S->uth Carolina, the father of the dea man, movod by the excessive weigl of the coffin, decided to open il When this was done, the corp-e witl e in was tound to have turned to stout >f and for a week the coffin was kei Il open, while many acquaintances cam to view the remains of their decease friend. The body, after having e: Lt cited much interest, was placed in tl: e family vault. During, or just aftc ,o the war, this vault was broken into b r parties unknown for the purpose, t was thought at the time, of robbin b the several bodies therein of the: r jewelry. The family, whose propert 2. the vault is, had the vau't reseale -nd little more was, at tle tim< sthought of the mat ter. 'g Last summer, however, o:ie of tt * -young men of the family, a medic r- tudent, having heard the tradition the petrified relation, determined1 .m.ke an investigatiou. Opening tI - :v:iult he found that the coffin, withi )M contents was missing. The vaul w thought not unlikely that th * .bery of the vault was for the pu: po-e of obtaining this petrified body which report has made famous. A to what subsequent disposal the rol b rs made of their booty is rnot knowi o and affords a subject for interestin LI saculation. The colored driver, wb d drove the team that broughtsthe coffi fro'- Alabama, is still.living, and ther g are others also, still living in th e neighborhood, who saw the petrifie o body, and who will vouch for tI: nateuracy of this account. It woul Sseem then, that Fairfiald has claimst g the discovery of a petrified huma e body, poior to that of more rece: o date. Sea on. .Ridgew ay S.
