Eetract froa interview in Headlight. ."S'iiator, wh:. did y0"uNoite for the - nime*6Butleffor the new c unty, itystead of Salada?" - "I am glpd you have asked me this -queadon, -for I-desi egonstate my po Sition and my i:casons in, linguage so l1ain that all.may_ -derstnd. I di-l not desire or itito h mor the name of Ex-Senator M. C Butler, but I hid iii m mimt at that time the name of William U.trerone ot the most gal ILatt q-!diers of t6e Rev,dlu-ion, and a heri from whale loin<4 sp uig a I ng line of the ablest saie.m mi an I %var ri)r4 thLt oar.state ias'ee'produced. Ditd Wn Butler, the foanl ler1 of Ih. illustrion< fNmily, to-day Sorvive, he would be a ref,rm.,r. .Wli,- our st-tte was a howling wilderness, Bater I ft Virginia on ho-sebic*:, his wife riding bebtud him, he.anse he c md not hold his own with the rich and nristo cratic families of the Old Dominion. He 6uilt a cabin upon the Salud, river, and when the war of th-i Revo lation broke out, did heroic battl: for his country. Two of my gr.-at uncles fell fighting in his command, while a number ot the family namei in the upper section of our state are linked with that of Butler Mv gre.t uncle narriel William Bulers daughter and her dust now reposes in the family burial-ground at Red Bank, in Saluda c>unity. Pierce Butler, an>ther horo e soldier ot this name, fell fighting b2 sides a brothe of Ben Tiliman's at Chirabr-sco, Mexico. 0 hers of that name have occupied high and distin guished positions i-1 onr State, and have rendered their pe iple faithful and vallient service Wnen M. C. Butler was a youth of 15 years. G e-rge D. Tillman was elected for the legis lature from Edgefleld c>unty, on the creation of this i.ew coun.y, to be known as Butler e.ounty. For 45 years the people o' that section con -tendedi for the name, the committee unanimously reported the name of Butler. adn~[ voted for the name of Butler. I did not have M. C. Btutler in view at the time, and Mr-. Gee D. Tillman expressly and distinctly s'ated upon the floor of the convention that the name was not intended as an honor to M. C. Butler. This reform movemedt is founded on great princi ples. It is not founded on passion, on hatred or on prejudice. We are not a set of ghouls, to dig up the bones of the dead and spit upon and spurn them. It is the honored name of But ler for which I cast my ballot. I have neither regrets to offer nor apologies te make. I f&zught Butler for five years in the Senate, an i I fought his re-election last ye:sr. Hie was defeated, and is a poor man who l.ad to leave his native state and go elsewhere to seek employment by which to make a support for his family. I d- not be lieve in insulting the dead or hounding down the living. Senator Bulter did wrong when he became an independent candidate, and he was rebuked by his people with a crushing defeat. Let us now leave him,.in peace, and remember that he left a portion of his body upon the battle.field of Virginia. If Senator Butler aspired for office to-day I would oppose him, for he do s not represent the sentiments of~ myself or my people. I conder inde pend-j ent candidacy as mns . .s any one, but nothingthat M. C. Butlet can do will cast a r eflection. upon those old hero'es, statesmen and patriots whose . dust repose in the soil of Saluda.
