The Fairfield members of the Con stitutior.al Convention spent Sunday with their families. Mr. Ragsdale was in town and returned on Monday. All of our members have been placed on committees. Mr. Ragsdale is on the committee on executive depart ment, and on a committee on impeach ments also. Mr. Meares is on a comn mittee on municipal corporations and police,-regulations, embracing the dis pensary question. Mr. Rosborough is on the committee on legislation. Mr. Brice is on the committee on miscel laneous de pat tment. Both Mr. Meares and Mr. R-3gsdale have offered reso lutions. Mr. Ragsda:es resolution has been iublished by us befgre, i t was taken mainly from the constitu tioni of the U.>nfederate States and gives the governor power to veto certain sections of a bill to pay out sae'_without extending the veto to the entire bi 1. It has bae~u known to a grei.t many for a long time that the dispensary at idgeway was in a miudle, and we ee requested by parties interested n the town's share of the profits to ithhold the publication of such facts as we knew for fear that publication at that time ight prejudice Governor vans anid the town might have diffi ulty i ccovering its share of tihe ril s which properly belo:sg to it. n accont of this -rcquiest we were uwpuraistic enough to accede to the equest. Bt~ the matter is in the ns; of the grand jury and our publi cation will in -no way affect either tcrst of town or county. The facets . are abo-ut is follows: t1 On tile day that Pope and Tii4man I spoke at Ridgewa , in August 1894, ~ the dispenser, Ri. D. Lewis, was sick r in bed; tile dispensary being closed, overnor Tillmnan, at the request of ne r'~ h-is friends from this county, cnt Lewis a written order to open up.1 ewis turned his key over to Mr.i Iynes, his 'former clerk, with in structions to open the place. Hlaynes ~ opened and it was not long before the tl men got pretty drunk and liquor was >fd without any money being col lected. Dr. Linder notified Lewis that he (Lewis) was ruined, that the o iuor was being carried away with-. ut being ac.counted for. Mr. Lewis lE hou sent Haynes word to close the Lc at once, but IIaynes replied that it would take a batalion of United States troops to put them out. There were differenut members of the military S ccm;>anys and others there, and they would lis:en to nothing. When Lewi's b ooks were examined again I he were found to be short about 53. The ma:ter was not attempted to be adjusted until about April, we o are informed. Tbc beard of control t] n~ re asked by Lewis to sue him in re that he m':ght make a proper ti lowng, but that he was not re sposible and would not pay the loss unless a jury said he must. Though~ this was a proper matter for the board to decide according to law, they would not act in tihe matter until Governor Evans had been-comutted. [We were informed that Lyles and Rutland, of the board of control, were in tie dispensary at the time it was eing emptied without pay, but have been informed since that Lyles was not bi tere at the time ard that he will ubstantiate this at the proper time.] The tmauer was then ha:uded Gov. Evans and he was fully aware that th2 dispensary was short $58S, and he way also mformned as to the manner in~ wlch the shurtag:e occurri d, was to:d, so it was s:a:ed to us. that the b)oys got it and it would be all juiht. With all thse lighits before him hec charged that 858 to the profit aceount of town and county, thus depiving Rlidgeway and Fairfield County out of $58, thus making the book bailance. The town of Ridgeway put its claim in the hands of its attorney and lie apealed to the county board for the town's share cf this mecy which is baf.
