Those near felt the effect of the shock. Another was struck very near the residence of Rev. T. W. Mellichamp. He did not plant enough to build a barn of his own but is only experimenting this year. We ho~e it will encourage him sufficiently for him to plant largely next year. -The election commissioners in Richland at first put one Republican on the board of managers at every box in the county, but it raised a howl from both factions and they removed them and put on Democrats. In fact the rain broks up the picnic party. We took shelter and dined at the hospitable home of Rev. T. W. The wife of a colored minister, Rev. J. C. IHemphill, died on Wednesday morning at seven o'clock. She had been suffering with fever. The re maine were shipped from this place for interment to Spratanburg. DEATH OF AN INFANT. Oa Wednesday about eleven o'clock an infant of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Crawford passedawsay. It had only been sick but eight or ten hours-was taken rather suddenly in the night and never ralied. The funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church this morning at ha'f past nine o'clock. The news spread to th2 city, a:i.I a curious crowd wa; s mun at the scene of the disaster. Dr. Frank Green was amo:.g the fi,:st to get there, and he began the work of ielievi:ig the in jur-d at once. It was found that Henry Young was dead and that Joe Jones had his lft thigh broken, also his right arm, and had suffered internal injuries. He was sent immediately to the alms house, where later in the day he died. Richard Ha'l had his right ankle broken, and was suffering, in tensely. As soon as possible he was r carried to his home, where rt List ac counts last night he was res ing as t well as could be expected. The account of the ancident given to Snp;erintendent Rivers, of the Colum r bi t Canal Company, who was prescnt at the time, is that the force of fifteen u gro men were at work taking dirt from the foot of the embankinent, whi. 1, n as ten or twelve feet high, to .la.., on th:e cnial bank. No danger s wn a ppreherided at all, and there was . no d: ,ing in'o thoecmbankment Nhich sloped back at an angle of fifteen or twenty degrees. The men were merely taking the dirt which was at the foot of the embanktnent, when sudden!y about half way up, a part -of tbe em bankment slipped outward, and the top of the earth, with a great deal of rotten stone and gravel, came tumbling down. Mr. Rivers, who was standing rear the mncii, happened to look tip at the instant that the fall commenced, and lie yelled to the men to run, which all of them did, save Henry Young, who seemed dazed. All of them es caped except Young, who was killed instantly, and Joe Jones and Richard Ha'l, who suffercd the it-jaries de scrib.l Mr. Rivers says that the greaest care is used wherever the men are at work, but that there was nothing to indicate that there was any danger to be feated from the embankment, at the b ise of which they were working yesterday. That only a few (":ys ago he hiimelf, to escape the rays of the sun, sat for a considerable time jast where the slide occurred. Subsequent investigation showed that a vein of soap stone was the cause of the trouble, and that the earth had merely slid away from it. A few hours after the accident hap pened Coroner Roach, accompanied by Dr. Kn->witon, arrived oin the scene. The coronter empanelled a jury, who examined the place and heard the testimony of those present. Thle ver diet rendered was that Henry Young had come to his death "by an accident catusedl by a land sllide." Dr. Knowlton examined Young's body, and stated that death had been caused by the breaking of his spine.
