The slab hi n as two feet by four and averaged in a thickness about one inch to one and a d quarter. The remarkable feature is fi that it was split without tLe use of a drills, was dona, we are informed, by o hammers alone. Mr. Iheath, who manages the quarry for Messrs. Ragsdale & Ragsdale, says he has never so even and uniform piece of granite, of its size, gotten out without tI the use of drills before. Says We Misquoted Him--His Explana tion--Stands by the Mass Meeting Plan. n Mr. Editor: You did not quote my speech at the late mass meeting cor rectly, and I desire to amend ) our publication. "I said I had no idea peace and harmony would ever be reach, d under the leadership of Irby and that this meeting should empha t size its desire for peace by asking him to resign the chairmanship. I quoted an intimate friend of his, who told me two years ago if I watched his (Irby's) movements I would see him kick whenever there was a seriou3 demon stration for peace, and that he would keer ' ap until he had secured his second term;" not as you publish, "that a gentleman who was in position to know had told him (me) that Irby had said there shall be no peace until alter the election for United States Senator" I did say, however, that I had watched him and others of the leaders and that the gentleman's prediction had been verified in the minutcst par ticular. A nd right here I wish to say that thi is the trouble about getting togeth( ; tbe people, the rank and file of both factions, are desirous of doing so, but the leaders who bave profited by the row consider it unprofitable to make peace, and will divert the issues if possible. My mind was drawn to - Irby by an incident which I wilt relate in no spirit of unkindness nor unjust criticism, but because I think it prob able that good will result. When the imass meeting was called to order I was in attendance uron a meeting in th Town Ihall where the Straighteut or hianahan faction were discussing, amongst othe' things, the propriety of attending the meeting in the Court House, whun a member of the execu tive committee drew from his pocket a copy of TUE NEWS AND HERALD with Mr. John W. Lyles' article in it, and after quoting extracts passed the paper around to the committee. The effect was instantaneous and it was deter mined to have nothing to do with the mass meetinst, as there could be no recociliation with any party led by so iniscreet a person. I took the p si tion, backed by one other, that this was as much my country as any other man's, and whilst I was sorry my dis tinguished cousin and brother-in-law h ad not increased his wisdom with his advancing years, nor added to his rather scant stock of charity by the addition of more piety, I did not in tend his pronunciamento should keep me away, and lett the meeting in ses ion; some followed, others never came. -Bat I promised to go da step further and say that I would advocate it,'' Si. e., the reconciliation or our people even at the Irby primary, and I take -this occasion to say that I see no rea son to chsnge my views, although Titi man bas gone back upon his pledges in Sthe most shameless manner since the reversal of the Goff injunction. There are various breakers ahead and I advise you, my coustrymen, to lay raside small men and narrow views and - immoning all of patriotism and char itable construction that humanity is .capable of, again to unite at the altar of our common country where we will ' renew the vow to give "equal rights to r all special privileges to none." I will add that I consider it specially obligatory upon the faction to which I belong, claiming as we do that we ar~e the more conservative element of the country, to show our faith by our works and not allow the ravings of nshallw pates to divert us from the true i-sues before us. e IT. We quoted the Major as saying, "that a gentleman, who was in a position to know, hal told him (meaning Major W.)~tbat Irby had said there shall be no peace in South Carolina until after the election for United States Senator comes off." These may not be the exact words. The dispute is, did the Major attribute this language to Irby or to "this gentleman who was in % position to know"-Irby's friend? Since there has been a denial on the part of Major Woodward that he in is speech attributed this language to [rby but to the gentleman who was talking to him, we have asked nine or ten men who were present what he said, and we are borne out by all of them with one exception.
