L.cawl Earl -We acknowledge an invitation to be present at the annual celebration of the Philomathean Society at Erskine College on the 17th of June. -The regular communication of Winnsboro Lodge No. 11, A. F. l., will be held this (Thursday) evening Pt 8.30 o'clock. Ry order of the W. M. -The State is calling on the citizens of Columbia to give only ten cents to the family of Mr. Bartlett who was killed by the caving in of a well in Columbia. -Constable Lafar left for Co lumbia on Tuesday and Constable Davis came up on the same day.. le returned on Wednesday and Constab'e Stevenson will go to the moonshine county on Thursday. -Thos. E. Johnston, a guard on the chain gang, came to town on Wednes day for the six convict,, who were sentenced at the Court this week and will put them to work on the road near Lingford's mill, about ten miles south of town. -There is more interest taken in the steam fire ccmpany than formerly. There is a committee working to pro vide new uniforms for the men, and we are glad to be able to state that they are meeting with succesa. This is an important organization and should be encouraged. Dong lais' squad made "fine time" and would have thrown it but J. P. Caldwell forgot to turn the water on, so their time was not given. CANE SEED. -A gentleman shied us some seed keveral days ago which ( he said were cane seed. We have nAver keen any before, in fact did not ow whether cane produced seed or w it spread its growth. Tbey are to lie at the joints. Iu appear- t they resemble oat seed very much. SAKE STORY.-Mr. L. E. Owens, who was attending to the cutting of some grass in Mr. R. Y. Turner's field, reports that he laid his coat down and when he went to get it at dinner time a large snake had taken possestion of it. The books presented for our inspec n were found to be correct. We present Justices G. W. Brooks, .B. Ilogan, A. WV. Matheson and A. Stevenson for neglecting to d in ther dockets to the grand jury. All of the trial justices, except T. M. tcart andl J. B. Stevenson, bave led to file a transcript of their 'okets with the Clerk of Court as quired by the Statutes. COUNTY OFFICERS. The grand jury at the last term of rt appointed a committee, with thority to employ the services of an pert, for the purpose of examining books and records of the county cials. This committee performed e duty assigned them and report to satisfactorily. BONDS OF COUNTY OFFFICERS. Those bonds reported by the grand v at last term as defective have been ingthened and are now good. PUBLIC ROADS AND BRIDGES. The following roads have been re )rted to us in very bad condition: Road leading froin T.C. Smith's and I K.
