11 NEWS AND HERALD W[NNSBORO, S. 0. P.nor.istIfus. J. Q. DAVIS,. P. M. 1 t10Eol, t t t t Editor Saturday, June 10, 18883 OUB STANDAtI)-IiEAIiEltS FOR PRtESIDENT : GROVER VLEVELAND, OF NEW YORK.: FOR VICE-PRESIDErNT : ALLEN G. THURMAN, OF 01110. Are We on Trial V .Mr. B. 0. Duncan, of Newberry, has written a letter to the Boston - Transcript in reply to a lottei' of Dr. Mayo in tho same paper, who defonded the educational system and work in this Stato against the false representatio)s of Hndrix McLane. It could not be expected that Mr. Duncan would have anything good to say about South Carolina, or the Democratic party, being a self-acknowledged Republican. It was, therefore, no surprise to road in his article such terms as "Bour bon," "ring rule," and other epithets that are used t>y men of the McLane stripe. Mr. Duncan is one, of the lights of the farmers' movement, and we think they should be advised as, to his opinion about the 'Democratic party-the party through which the farmers hope to secure the adoption of their plans. So much for Mr. Duncan. Some PeoplO in Boston, urged on by such men as McLane, secin to think that their services are needed in this State to assist in conducting the govern mont. So far as we can learn the peo pl of this State are abundantly able to govern themselves, and the very impudent ofl';r of assistance is declined without thanks. Wu thinlk these peo ple couldeasily find something to do in Massachusetts, and if they are so much interested in good government, we think their clYorts would be far more ellictive at home than in South Carolina. Aside from these peoplo, the Boston Tran.cript seems to be itching to take a hand in our aflii's. It devotes col utns, both editorial and otherwise, to alflairs In South Carolina. Oe would think that the State was on trial in u Boston, with the editor of the Tntn script Judge and McLane & Co. jury. What. has Boston, the Transcript or anybody clo in Massachusetts got to do with our affhirs? We are doing the best we can, and proposo to make appropriations to thoCollege at Comm bin, the Citadel iad Cillin just as we i wvant, wit heat consultinug any outside parties. Massachusetts can goverm it.. selt' without our assistance. We pro pose to do the same thintg. This being the case the Transcript, McL~ane e or any other mian can howl as much as they please. Appropriatins for Colle~geN. Mr. D)uncan, in his let ter to t .c Boston T1ranscript , arraigns tihe De)mo cratic p)arty for its partiality in appro priat ions for educatilon. The Columbia Register, on this point, says: Mr. D)uncan next belittles the State aid for' colored educattion. lie says that the State University receives nearly $100,000, of' which only $ 10, 000 goes to Cillin, and ho comp~ares Ei Chaflin's 9416 students with 175 ol' the South Carclina College. Alr. D)uncan must know that of the $100,000 at least $25,000 goes to ex perimnental wvork on farms, and cannot be charged against instruction, lie must know also that this new organIzation hazs not gone into ell'ect yet, and therefore the prVoposed expenditure has no conniec tioni with the present allowance, lie should know that the South Carohli na College this year has not mocre than $30,000. lie should know that this sum is Inflnitesimal coimparedl with the - money spent in Northern colleges, and wvill not therofore alarm tho 11oston Transcript as it frightens a South Carolina voter. Again, the llegister Is surprised that one who has attended Gernmn universities and knows what A higher education is wvould compare Claimi's 946 'Ustudents'' wvith the 175 stud(ents in Columbia,.*when It, is true that at Clafin not more than a hand fuil are in the inastit ution. Tlhis isJ nothing against Clatlin, but it is cer tainly no argument ahainist the South Carolina College, and the Tr'anscript will be pleased to know that South Carolina is not cheese-paring. It will know aleo that t.he $10,000 given to A Claflin by the State Is enough to suip plmn orthern philanthropy. WEAhink it would be well for the Democratic party to be on the watch for the enemy. It Is stated that Ieo publicans are registering heavily in some of the. counties, their inten tion - being to make an ell'ort to defeat. Democratic candidates for t .ongress. Democrats must not remain inactive under such circumstances. Every Democrat should register. THEREmi is great opposition mnanifosh. ed In Congressman Tillman's district v against him, owing to his views on a the tarlfl'and opposition to the admnin- a istration. THEm State Executive Committee will meet on the 19th lust, Arrange monts wvill be made for the u'ominating convention and the date of its meeting. i TilE MIllis 1)111 contains 1,332 lines, Uip to Friday only seventy-five of theto lines had beeni considered, and they ~ have been considerably patched up. e -1ev D)r.
