THE NEWS AN I)1E ALD WINNSBOROts. C. P. . oRI , r sTous. J. Q. DAVIS, 1 P. -M. BRIoE, t a t t Edltot HATURDAY, APRIL 7, t t t 1888 CONORESSAlAN TILLMAN says that le can be counted on to voto' with the tariff reduction element of the party IT is.- just now fashionable witi Presidential candidates to positively decline the nomination. It is said that Gov. Hill will soon come out in the public press declining the honor BENJAMIN IIARIiS BREwsTER died at his home In Philadelphia on the 4th inst. Ho was a notable figure in lega and political life. le . was Attorney. General during Arthur's administra. tion and made an excellent record. AMONG other names mentioned in connection with the Chief Justiceship the most prominent at present are Senator Gray, of Delaware, and Speaker Carlisle. Both gentlemer have talents which may be expected to shine should either receive the ap pointment. JACOn SIIAnP's case has been trans ferred to a higher Court. He died on Thursday. .le was the chief of the New York boodlers, and was tried and convicted, but his case was taker to the Supreme Court and a now tria was graftted. ''his trial was to com off soon, but his death will end it. Io was old and feeble. Oratory Long l)awn Out. The average tariff speech in Con gross is about two hours long, and over one hundred Republican mom bers have signified their desire to speak. The average working time in Congress Is not more than three houri in length after the morning businoss has been transacted. It can be easily seen, therefore, that unless the work ing time is Increased or night sessiom are held. the debate will carry us or till June. These speeches are said tc be a plan of the Republicans to delay action in the matter until after the St. Louis Convention, but the scheme is too transparent to work. Speaker Carli@lo will doubtless check such a palpable effort to postpone action. 'What one Noopoly WVA4 Two reports have boon, a ways and moans committee tarif issue-the majority sust.,,,.du the Mills bill and the minority oppos lng it. Tho mninority report was by no means a reply to the Democratic side. Among other statements we note the 0110 in wvhich it is said that the f'armners want protectilon. And wvhat farmers are they? The wool growvers of Ohio and the West. Those articles in general use, manufactured from wvool, arc already p)rotected to over sixty per cent. The Mills bill very wisely reduces thnis to about thirty-five per cent., thus greatly cheapening the covering of every man, woman and child in the land. Toj1 show the extent to which mocnope list greed can be carried, wvo will state *that the convention of wool dealers, growers andi manufantures have p)eti. tioned the ways and means commit tee that the present tariff on wool should be raised to 100 per cent. According to ,this sehpme the other farmers and * professions will be taxed something like the following: The present tariff on a certain grade e of blankets is 03.85 ad valorem, but these farmers want it placed at 128.70. This Is their own figure. On ready made clothing, ladies' anid children's apparel made up wholly or in part of wool, worsted, the hair of the Alpacca goat or other like animals, the present tariff is 07.74. Trhe wool monopoly wants it 83.11 adZ valorcm. On women and children's dress goods, composed of wool or In part, the present tariff Ia 67.89. The wool men want it 102.01. Flannels, best quality, at present Is 78.42.. They want It 121.39. The best grade of wvool hats are at present 78.04. The wool men's scheme would place It at 13.5.4. The best grade of woolen shawls are now 88.44. The proposed tariff would be 120.32. The best quality of yarns would be ,taxed 117.11. All ether twanufactures not especially eni,mor , ated, mad.wholly or in part of wool, nocording to grade and quality, wo'ul be taxed anywhere between 84.92 tc 126.87., We have thus selected out of many articles of woolen manufactures thoe< mest commonly used by peor ai rich alike to show tihe greed of theac monopolists and to .what extent the) would go unless checked. The flgp;roi above speak more forcibly thani wordm could tellI, and we therefore make n< commehtL on themn. . As to this handful of farmers, ai compared Mith the millions in thlu country, -we think It would be fa, bettet and less burdensome to the res of the people If . the govornmen would pension these men outright It cannot be'Dosslble that th4rahm shall be carried thanuh 4r oim Syrup, iogf .?
