Editors: The letter of my friend, Maj. T. W. Woodward, whidh, through your kindness, recently ap peared in the columns of your interest Ing paper, was not intended by me to be published; but since it has been, will you kindly grant me a small space to bespeak for it, if any should deem it worth notice, a just and fair criticism? I am aware that, in the present status of the Farme's' Movement, it Is very natural for others to closely watch every step, and perhaps be too prone to interpret what is not so intended, as aptagonistle to them. A just inter pretation of ny letter contains the re mark that it is not an attack on the .lavyers, but a plain setting forth of a state of affairs of which the lawyers are the chief instruments-I cheerfully add, the able and honorable instru mente-upon who m the aforesaid letter In no wise seeks to cast censure. I would do violence to any own convic tions of right and justice, it making an attack on them, that would convey, by the faintest implication, the im'pres sion that I favored a movement that would exclude them "root and branch" from office or would have as a result the inhibition to the courts even to constwe the laws. Personally I en tertain only kind feelings for the lawyers. I flatter myself I have some good and true friends among them. As a class they are gentlemen of ability, culture and refinement worthy to participate in the ofices and the management of public aflairs, and I have no doubt will always do so. But it is manifest, and to none, I sus pect, more clearly than to the lawyers themselves, that our government is an oligarchy. Hence as true patriots, and I know they are as true as anty other class of our citizens, it is confi dently hoped not only that they will not oppose, but will reely give their pawerfml aid to cure this evil. .Friend "Tqnant" thinks it unfortu nate that I used the ex pression, "a government of the people for the pee bolO, by the people" etc., as the law yoh'., will try, as be alleges, to make out - M 'tit is iniconsistent with the thirteentn, four.teenth and fifteenth amendmea to thieConistitutioni of the United States I ama sure I correctly apprehend "T- 'b~ meaning. I am re luctant to accept te utional deduction from this lattguage. .amv~ correct, however, I will attempt to reasn "T." by the suggestiob that if the government of thne State by the Demo cratic party is consistetnt with the aforesaid amendments, then the lan guage of my letter, as quoted above, is conihtent with them also. The further deduction that may pos sibly be drawn from "T.'s" language, Viz., that the Jawyers will encourage dissensions, and 'hold over us the menace of negro rule, if there is an attempt to disturb tihe present oligar chy; or, in other words, that they will ruin, if they cannot rule, 1 reject as unworthy of consideratiott. Itf this is "T.'s" meaning, let me assure him that lie does this most worthy class of our citizens profound~ injustice. None will more vigoro usly oppose such an effort than they. 'HAYNE MOMEERIN.
