Courtenay and the entire municipal ticket of Charles ton were, on Tuesday, the 11th Inst., overwhelmingly elected. The practi cally unanimous vote polled for Mir. Courtenay and his colleagues on that day was one of those splendid on dorsements of a pure and economical administration of the city government that does honor to the citizenship of Charleston. To the indefatigable of forts of the o.Yews and Courier in the mnulicipal campaign, the thanks of Charlestion and the State at large are due, and we donbt not will be heartily and cordially given. The ex ercises will be had in the Agricultural Hall in Columbia-the Clariosophic on Monday evening and the Euphradian on Tuesday evening next. Mr. J. B. Davies is the president and Mr. M. L. Harrell the orator of the Clariosolhic Society, and Mr. V. L. Bass is the president and Mr. J. C. Buchanan, of this place, the orator of the Euiphra dian Society. The following are the marshals: J. Till.Ez E.ECTIoN CASES.--The case of the United States against Edwin A. Betliea and others, charged with breakinag np a Greenaback miectinig at Mariona on Novemnbcr 6, 1882, by threats, iniid~ation and violence, has been heard and concluded before the United States Circuit Court at Columi bin. Tbe trial excited special interest and sympuathyv all over the State, and( the testimnony of the witnesses and arg'umnit of counsel consumied sev. cral dlays. T1hae case wvas given to the jury at 6.45 p. mn. on last Wednesday. After fruitless efforts at agrecmnenit till eleven o'clock, the jury was called in and Judge Bond ordered a mnistri-il. All honor is due the zeal and ability of counsel for the defendants in these trials, anad to their credit be it said, that the United States government, wvitha all its power, with a corrupt and packed jury panel, with the eloquence of Melten and the unscrupulousnecss of the Georgia ren egade, have not been able to procure a single convic tion of a Democrat at the present ternm of the court. The cases against Thoes. McGill, Jr., and J. G. Herron, fr~om this county, have been continued ntil the next terma of the court, and the probabilities arc now that they w.il never be triedi. We patienatly indulge the hope that the government and the district-attorney will, after a time, conclude that convictions with no evi dence cannot be procured in South Carolinia even with an empanelled jury of Greenback hirelings and ignorant Republicans.
