Consain. (Mr. Maturin was of Iluguenot de scent, his ancestor a clergyman, set tling in Ireland onl the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Mr. Maturin's father was Curate of St. Peter's, Dub lin, and a poet and dramatist of gen ins. His play of "Bertram" ran for a hundred nights, brought the author a thousand pounds. Edward Maturin, his second son, cano to Amieri-a in 1832, with letters from Thomas Moore and other leadiun literary men. He studied here with Charles O'Connor, and was admitted to the bar, but sub sequently, upon the recoi inendation of Professor Charles Authon, was cm ployed as prolessor of Greek at Mount Zion College, Winnsboro. . Then le married Miss Harriet; Gaillard, daugh ter of Dr. Edward Gaillard. A few years after he returned to New York, where he taught till his death. lie wrote a number of romances, of which Montezuma was dra matized and acted with much success. Ilis deeply root sd religious principles, his renarkable knowledge of the Scriptures and his high attainments-as a Greek and Latin scholar drew to him men of noble character. When the Bible Union was formed in 1850 he was selected as one of its corps of revisers, the Gospel of Mark being assigned to him. Mr. Jas. Wood Davidson's sketch will forcibly recall MIr. Maturin to the older citizens of Winnsboro, who will regret to learn that he Is no more.
