Tnu YEAR 1881.,-Some nathenati. cal genius undoubtedly gifted with a large share of patience, has figured out the following in regard to the year 1 81: From left to right and from right to loft it reads the same; 18 di vided by 2 gives 9 as a quotient; .18 divided by 9 gives 2; if-81 be divided by 9 the quotient cdntains a 9, if -nmul tiplied by 9, the product contains two 9's; 1 anid 8 are 9; 8 and 1 are 9. If 18 be pia'ced under the 81 aned added, the sumi is 99h. If' the figur'es be added tihus, 1, 8, 8, 1, it will give 18. Read ing from left to right it is 18, aned read ing fruom right to lef t it Is 18, aned 18 is twvo-ninaths of 81. The oat has been found wild and thouroughly in. digenous, though not In as perfect a cQdiltion for .agricultural uses as the forms we grow, still there io no doubt that the cultivated and wild firms are the same. Of wheat, no form has ever been found wild that anly one could sa. was the parent of our kind; and botanists believe that either wheat has so widely diverged from the wild orig. inal that the relationship cannot now be detected, or th'at the wild original has entirelv disappeared tVom the earth's surtace. Tihe last position Is the generally accepted one; though a qularter of a century or more ago, a IPrench gentleian triled.a series of ex p oriments by which he contcluded he had raised wheat fiVon a wild grass of that country, by successive selections throt'gli several generations. These observations,,however, do not seem to have carried much weight with them, as we see no reference made to them by those eminent men who have been recerntiv discussing the question. Our Indian corn seems to be more of a mystery than any of the others, for no one has ventured an opinion that we know, as to whether it Is an inroved race from some wild thing now lost, or the orignal wild plant it self, destroyed by Nature, though pre served by man. It was founid hv our old world eingrants when the''fiist landed here, in cultivation by the no tives, but nowhere wild. This was especiniy the case with the IndianA of Central America; but. even the north ern Indians, or at least the squaws, grew corn. The Winnebagoen and other tribes about Lake Michioan made corn eilture an especial feature using shells In the place of spades and lines, and to this day the remains of their "corn cellars" (holes in sandy groundi) and cornhihll are among the the most inferesfinsR their remains. Corn is foutid ii . na now; but whether it was knoiv there before the intercourae of' Euronenns with them does not anpear conclnsive, as the evidence conflicts; but it would be Interesting to know this for certain. It would not only. throw light ol the native counirtv of the Tndianl corn. but perhnip help 'those who are studying 1Idin ant iquities also.-Germantown Telegraph. -Among the most efficlent appoint ments in the shoe mnanufactorles of the present day are the boot and shoe crlinniner ntiachities-two entirely sep arate itvenilons-fh'e forniet'r einr ca pable of perfectly crimttl)iiig twelve to sixteen cases of'boots dai%, b'tter alko than can1 h1e ciimned e1 - band. ad the shoe crimper fliuishlinig-, ini a perfect manner over four hundred Prtrs per hour.
