of a mystery than any of the others,
for no one has ventured an opinion
that we know, as to whether it Is an
inroved race from some wild thing
now lost, or the orignal wild plant it
self, destroyed by Nature, though pre
served by man. It was founid hv our
old world eingrants when the''fiist
landed here, in cultivation by the no
tives, but nowhere wild. This was
especiniy the case with the IndianA of
Central America; but. even the north
ern Indians, or at least the squaws,
grew corn. The Winnebagoen and
other tribes about Lake Michioan
made corn eilture an especial feature
using shells In the place of spades and
lines, and to this day the remains of
their "corn cellars" (holes in sandy
groundi) and cornhihll are among the
the most inferesfinsR their remains.
