Caldwell, died at Black stock on Monday, of pneumonia. - Mr. Caldwell had been living in Mississip pi, but removed to this State about two years ago. - He leaves a wife, a son and many' friends to mourn his death. KEsHAw's BnIGADE.-The follow Ing from the Columnia Reguter will be of inte'est to many old soldiers in Fairfield: "In pursuance of a resolu tion adopted at a meeting of a few of the survivors of Kershaw's Brigade, held at Columbia during fair week in November last, a meeting of. the rep resentatives of the brigade was held at Parker's -Hall on .the evening of December 16. Gen. M. L. Bonham was called to the chair, and Col. Wm. Wallace was requested to act as secre tary. Thme Chair briefly stated the object of the meeting, and .on motion of General Kennedy a* committee of fIve, consisting of General Bonham, General Conner, Colonel Wallace, Captains Leapheart and O'Neale, was appoin ted to arrange for a reunion of the brigade at Columbia during fair week-in -Novemiber, 1880, and on mo-. tion of Colonel McCutchen, General Bonham was requested to deliver an address on that occasion. To the Honorable President and Mem. bers of the Senate: Finding that grave doubts aro enter. tained by some, whose opinions are entitled to the highest respect, as to the power of the present, General As sem ly to fill the vaoancy in the office of Associate 'Justice of the Supreme Court which would be occasioned by my accoinance of the office of Chief Justice upon the expiration of the teri for which the present incumbent has been elected, I feel compelled by a sense of duty to decline to accept the ofee of Chief Justice to which, by your kindness, I have been elected. 1 am not willing, for the sake of mere personal advancement, to take any step by which the slightest doubt may be thrown upon the legalikty of the composition of the Supreme Court or that the interest of the State should be, in the slightest degree, imperilled by a failure to complete tle organization of that tribunal promptly in such manner as is tought to be the best calculated to secure the welfare of tihe State. A large number of bills and resolu tions were then pased-none of them of general interest. A concurrent resolution was adopt ed, that the two houses meet in joint assembly at 1, p. M., on the 18th inst., to elect a Chief Justice. HOUSE OF REPnESENTATIVES. The resignation of Gen. Sami. Mc Gowan, as a member from Abbeville, was received and accepted. The bill to impose a special tax upon intoxicating liquors (the bell-punch law) was defeated by a large majority. The bill to facilitalte the completion of the Blue Ridge Railroad was taken up for a second reading and, after considerable debate, the enacting clause was stricken out. The bill to incorporate the Colum bia aid Lexington Water Power Com pany was amended and passed to a third reading. The bill to provide artificial legs for soldiers of the State maimed in the late war was passed to a third reading. The appropriation bill was discussed up to the hour of adjournment. TUESDAY, December 16, 1879. SENATE. The bill to create a State Depart ment of Agriculture came up on its second reading, and, after some debate, was passed to a third reading. A large number of bills received their third reading-all the, important ones of which have already been no ticed. The bill to prohibit the running of freight trains, and to regulate the running, of passenger trains, on Sun day wvas taken up, and discussed without action. Mr. Counts introduced a bill .to abolish the office of Railroad Commis sloner. The bill to extend the time to re deem forfeited lands was read a third time. A number of private bills were passed to a third reading. HOUsE OF REPRlESENTATEs.. The bill to amend an act to provide: for drainage in Anderson and Beau fort was amended by adding Fairfield, Chester, Union, Greenville, Oconce, Laurenis and po~rtions -of Abbeville counties, and thme bill was thesiila'ased to a third reading. A bill to repeal an act entitled "An Act to alter and amend the law in relation to elections," approved March 22, 1878, was read tile second time and ordered to be engrossed for a third reading. (This bill repeals the two box provision.) A large number of bills passed their second reading, among, them the fol lowing: A bill to incorporate the town of liythewood. The bill to appoint an additional trial justice for F airfild county 'was laid on the table. The appropriation bill was taken up, and after sundry amendments passed to a third reading.
