That of 1870--An Old Gtuard that Outlives All Waterloos aud Never Strrenders. (tPhihidelphia Tines, Ind.j Who has forgotton that In 1872 Ie publicanism swept this city by tens of thousands, the State by ono hundred and forty thousand and the country by an immense popular and almost urimouis electoral voite? Here and there a State gave a nominal majority againlst GrVait, but oily six out of thirty-seven fiailed to cast their eloc toral votes for the Iepublican candi dat e. The North was solid for Ite publicanism by more than half a mil lioni imijority, and the party had jolIl tIed ali1 I ts orators sioke only of vio tory ind of a clotidless future, as thoy did Oil Saturday evening. Two years thereateir, the same Ie publica'lsImI that. had bei borne Into power by a Inajority that. seemed to annihilate all O)posit.ioni, wis detated in a majority of the Northern States, defeated li Conifress, and the foundation of lie pibicanl sup ,remacy' in the Senate do stroyed. In 1875 the Republicans rallied, and by a!lmost silpithuiuani ettbrt, b y the exhat8i'vo em1 .ploymenit of all Che power, and political resour ces of the government, Ohio was re. COVere<.I by a niminal majority, Penn sylvamia was saved by a plurality, only becalus of the overwheliming ma jorits wrouight out in Philadelphia, anitd iIl the debatablo States of the North treibled in the balance. One year thereafter, when eight and a (jlirter millions east. their ballots for Presidlelnt, the tepublicans were do feated by it (uirter of a million ma jority of the poptilar vote. Again in 1877, the tide culninated against Ie pubbiean power, and Connecticut, New Jersey, Now York, Pennsylvanlia and Ohio 'wCiero swept into the *Demo cratic coltili. A year litter the le publicans 1riumpied by bare plurali ties inl the samel States, and now itinle, California, and probably Ohio, are again lieptiblican by bare plurali ties, as will be Pennsylvania, New York, and likely Massachusetts, in November. WhiQe.n tile elections of 1879 shall be footedti up an1d the onl thusiasm that wildly rejoices without regard to the stubbori facts of arithl met ic shall come to a sober iivestiga I ion of the election figures, who will finid tie lRopublican outlook of 1879 iy more pronising for 1880 than It wab in 1875 for 1876? The Cominig Man. [Aust-in reslattery's Estimate.7 Now, who can carry New York? We answer SAMUEL J. TILDEN, and will show facts and figures where of we speak. In 1868 Tilden used all his influence inl favor of S 'mour, and the State went 10,000 1 emocratlo. Some may Say Seymour coild have carried it wvithotit the aid of Tilden, but they do not know whether lie could or not. Tilden worked hard, and Ihe State went for Sevmour. In 1872 Tilden took no partitular part in the campaign, owing llpartly to the act ion of Tamimany Ilall and the Lib critls, and chiefly the work of John, C. Littlejohn. The State gave Grant 52,000 majority, and the Republicans elected .Jolm A. Dix governor over Francis Kernan (Dem.) by a minjority (ot 53,000, Shortl1y after, the light bd t weenl Ta~lmany andi~ anti-Tlammiiany ramred, niul hasl ben continluued to this <lbly, wilth tihe exceptilon of time interval of thie camlipaign of 1876, when they becalmle tu itd 011 Presidettial and State lickets. In 18741 Tildent was nminiated for governor and, U)llIT TIllE OiPOSITION OF~ TA MMANY, he carried the city of New York by 42,000, and the State by 5,000 outside the city, t hus giving him 47,000 ma Jority over John A. Dix, who was elected the pireviouis termn by 63,000. I1 waltls then noiniated for Presl (dilt ait St. Louis 0on the second ballot over tihe opplos iin of Tainnnaniiy and thle two-ir pliple which governs Nat ional Deortilovntosie carriedl the State by 8:1 000 majority, riiuiig aihlead of his tic -et. In 1877, Joim IKelly securedi the nomInatioln ot Anigustuls Scell as a candidate for the Seventeeinth Monlatorial district. Anti Tamlinany~li noinaiifted Johni Morrissey for the samte 01lice, anud, although lie (Morrisscy) haid at maj~ority of 6,000 1o oveoime, lie was triumphantly elected lby 8,c00 majorit.l-. inl 1877. Kelly algain stepped to the front ais dictator and nominated Schell for Mayor of New York Cit~y. Anti Tiuiiaiman, led by Tilden, nominated ~d win Cooper2 and1(, although he0 had 531,000 majority to overcome, hie (Cooper) was elected by 20,000 majori tv. In 1878, this same year, the bState wenit liepulblicanl by 37,000 mai Jority. In September, 1879, the Democratie party met io'convent ion at Syracuse, and nomi11noted Lucius Rtobinson, the piresenit incuianhent, as their candidate form governor by al most three-fourths of all the delegates, lhe having obtalin ed 243 delegates out of8738, the whole niuinber. Tammiany bolted, that be ing part of the programme for thorn to do1 so, and nominated Johnu Kelly, knlowing full wvell that they' could not induce t'heir &ilnds to vole for Cornell as against Itmobinson, but by nominat.. img a candidate-of their own thoy hope to draw ofl votes enough from Rtobin son to defeat him and elect Cornell, bcause Johni Kelly ays ho has no hopes0 of hbeing elected himself. No muatter' who the governor of Now York should be, John Kelly is politically annlihilalted In anmy event, because anti TIammtany conistitultes three-fourths of tile Democracy' of the State, and they will stanid by 'llden, anld Tammany will have the bltter pill to swallow. If Kelly could not0 control his own stronghold, viz.: tile city of New York, Is ho not a poor leader for the Democracy to have at the head of their State Committee? Some PRlETE~NDED) FRIENb>s OF TILDENR claim that the attack of Cyrus WV. Field would injuro him and thus throw the 1arty upon tho tiinsv in 1880, but it is generally knlown that Cyrus W. Field is, and always has beenu a stalwart lteptulican, and, of couurse, it would be in to natural or dcr of things for 4N~ tabuaso Tildenm. In time second place, '~rus Wbllield oreoted a monuninto tile,.nemory of hlajor Andre, a Brittsh ap , who was captured and'ekoeted de igh during the llevolutionary Wet'. 4pretty man to dictate Aricrlan pe1tles, js he not? Tho wthole natiot~ seemed-to be absorbed in tho Allen. Hiayeos contest of 1876. People who have menories will remem ber that 'Wtd bitcrest outside of Ohio was even greater and more general in 1876 than this year. Every one secned to think that upon that contest turned the Presidency of 1876. Well, Allen was defeated. Haves was elected governor of Ohio. Ite publicans were jubilant. Democrats were discouraged. And, yet, what followed the year after? Why, every Republican almanac shows that the Republicans lost the Presidential election in 1876; that Mr. Hayes did receive a majority of the electoral or popular votes, even with Ohio. Every Republican almanac shows thet the Dpiourats carried the ma jority of the States, of the people and of the electoral college wi lout Ohio. But, If Ohio was not necessary to Democratic success in 1876, why in 1880? If, after the defeat In 1875, followed the great victory In 1876, why should the defeat of 1879 prevent victory in 1880? Is the&e any difference between the situation of 1876 and 1879? Yes. In 1875 several Southern States, as well as Indiana and Now York, were in doubt. To-day the 1118 votes of the South and the 15 of In diana are as good as already cast, or 158 out of the 186. In 1876 there was really a contest for the entire 185 votes. In 1880 there will be practically no contest for 163 9f then. In 1876 Grant was President, and with all his faults Grant was a man who occupied the Presidency legally and by the will of the people. But in 1880 the Presidency is occupied by a sham, fraud and hypocrite; a man who was never elected by the people; who Is in the White Hoise by peijury, bribery, fi'aud and crime; who has broken every pledge he made, and Is almost equally detested by all parties. It seems to us that if t tere is any difference between 1879 and 1876, it is greatly in favor of 1879. No Growling. [Indiianap olis Sentinel.] Possibly the Republican conspira tors may 'Will in 1880, and winl they will, If hiemocrats permit their hearts to sink down Into their boots-if they become as limp as shoe strings. There Is eterpal vitality in Demiocratic prin ciples that will survive the scheies of the Republican party. To be a Democrat is to have faith in the Ieo ple In the right, in the Constitutlon, and in ultimate triumph. Ohio is, for the present, Republican. New York, Pwith thle provoking divisions lin thfe Democratic party, mr.ay follow suit. If so, so be it. Afler that, organize and get ready for 1880. In 1876 the Democrats won. Why not. in 1880?
